Rockets lose at the buzzer; This could be my last post

November 7th, 2008
by John

The Rockets lost a heartbreaker to Portland on a 30-foot buzzer beater by Brandon Roy. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to see the game, and I’m glad I didn’t. You can read and weep the game story here at the Chronicle site.

I do have something I need to tell you that’s pretty important, though. I have decided after running YMM for over 6 ½ years, I’m going to have to take a break from the site, and it could be permanent (gulp!).

I could have just disappeared and not said anything, but then all of you would be wondering what happened. I owe more to you guys than that.

I had decided several months ago that heading into this NBA season, I can’t continue to sacrifice my time, money and health without making a reasonable financial return on the site. It has been like a second job to me. Even moreso now since I’m not in Texas as much as usual because of a time-consuming job which makes it very difficult for me to watch Yao’s games. Also, every extra hour I can get back in my life is precious. I have become extremely busy over the past year, and it’s not going to let up.

Many of you know I have accepted donations in the past, but I refuse to take those any longer. I very much appreciate your past contributions, but after seeing what was donated the past few years, it’s far from being enough to make it financially viable.

A few months ago my original plan was to try to “blow out” the site by redesigning it so more ads could run, and get the help of Ren Hsieh and Raymond in China so more interesting content could appear on the site every day. That would help drive more page views, more visitors, and more ad revenue from which I could pay them and make a small return for myself. As a good faith effort to Raymond and to keep the site going through the all-important Beijing Olympics, I even paid money out of my own pocket so he could provide exclusive coverage to YMM over the summer and during the Games. He did a fantastic job as always.

But right before the Olympics started, Yao’s marketing people requested that they were uncomfortable with some of the ads that were appearing on the site, which is not easy to control. I understood their concern, and I agreed to take down the ads, and they vowed to try to work out some kind of way for YMM to get compensated within a couple of weeks. I tell you this because I know many of you would simply recommend, “put up ads.”

Well, to make a long story short, their efforts to find another source of revenue have been unsuccessful. And now that the season has started, running the site takes much more time than it did over the summer. So for now, I have decided to retire from YMM. Hopefully it’s temporary, but it could be permanent.

Meanwhile, if anyone is interested in sponsoring the site, I would entertain offers. Worst case, I am willing to sell the YaoMingMania.com domain, and am open to offers in the 5-figures range.

Who knows, though, maybe some kind of financial deal can get worked out, and I’ll be back to blogging, along with Ren & Raymond’s help and them getting paid a fair amount, too.

If either of these scenarios happens, I’ve been thinking about how you will find out so you can come back to the site.

One way is for you to just come back to the site periodically and check it out. Another way is for you to send an email to alerts@yaomingmania.com saying you want to be notified in case something is worked out, and I’ll email you and let you know.

In the meantime, I will continue keeping the YMM Forum open where everyone can continue to converse about Yao and his games. If you want a username so you can post in the forum, go ahead and register then send an email to john@yaomingfanclub.com telling me the username you requested, and I will approve your username request.

I hate goodbyes, so hopefully this is just “so long for now.” If it truly is goodbye, I know I’ll really miss it. This site has been a big part of my life over the past 6 ½ years, and it has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.

    congrats and thank you.

congrats on doing something quite amazing. you have documented in painstaking detail every game of Yao Mings first 6 1/2 years in the NBA. Quite simply something that is unique to our times and unlikely to happen again. (I believe there is anyone out there documenting every single game in this level of detail) you should at least look into Guiness book of records- there maybe a unique position for YaoMingMania.com ;).

thank you for doing it. I'm definitely not alone in saying this. I've come here to get the latest Yao info in new york, the uk, and now in China. really can't get his kind of covereage anywhere else (not espn.com, not chron.com nowhere). Great stuff.

Ad revenues for online is a tough model to build off of. Perhap there are others you can consider?

no john dont leave! i was thinking about you and your website today on my way to work! man this is too sad and too tragic! shoot i understand you have your own things to do though. you took us on a wild ride, the first chinese nba all star ever so as disappointed as i am this year and as hard as i always am on yao, it was a great experience for all of us coming together with so much love and criticism, but in the end, support. i'll keep checking back for the next few months regardless. i enjoy looking back on the many articles and posts about yao as well
    peace out!

Thanks, Arthur. Hopefully somehow Team Yao will be able to find a sponsor or a way for me to be able to continue blogging about Yao and the Rockets, so keep checking back. -- John

Hey John, sad to hear this, but totally understandable. It's a tough decision I'm sure, but the right one for now.

I've been a visitor to this site for a few years (can't believe it's already been 5 years since I first joined). It's hard even just making decent posts to the forum -- let alone the unbelievably in-depth, high-quality posts you've been making. Your posts provide what I think is some of the best coverage and analysis of Yao or the Rockets anywhere -- both on the internet and in the traditional mainstream media.

It's been quite a labor of love, but sadly in this world, that's not enough -- and you have to look after your personal financial self-interest, as well as health.

As so many have already said, we're grateful for all you've done over the years, and wish you the best of luck in the future. Smart, thoughtful, enterprising, passionate people like you will always do well.

One of my favorite sports websites. WOuld always come here knowing the site would be up to date with recent game posts...unlike other websites (not saying any names) Understandable that you have to deal with your personal issues but your blogs will be missed.

    Hi John,

I've been lurking here for the past 2 years or so. It's very sad to hear that the site might be coming to an end. Thank you for all the hard work you have put into this place. Best of luck to you in the future.

    John,

I can't find any other website more entertaining than your site as Yao's fan. You have done a great great job to run this blog. Thanks for sharing and being a true Yao Ming super fan.
I can't believe that Yao's management team don't listen to you. I feel sad for Yao Ming. He just lost the best fan base website to support him. Who would follow more closely to him? Who would have more photos and comments post since he jointed the NBA?

Is there another way to reach Yao Ming himself for help? I want to email him to tell him about your situation. Yao should give back something his fans want. At least, to keep this blog running is not something he cannot afford.

If this blog is terminated for the financial reason, I am not only feeling sad but would lose faith in Yao. seriously, think about it. Like John, a truely big icon Yao fan cannot find the support of his idol. What is the point that we still support Yao Ming? Yao, you have to wake up and Must Do something to keep your loyal fans happy!!

    Best Wish

"I am surprised that Yao’s people couldn’t help find a source of revenue for you"

Sadly, I'm not. Chinese people seem to not understand anything about the importance of good PR and fan service. Which is why they have gotten such a bad "brand" rep globally...cuz they do absolutely nothing to conteract all the bad press.

I mean, you figure Yao would at least have already had his own site up run by his management team. Instead, it takes some lone superfan, John, to come up with one completely on his own. And with absolutely no acknowledgement or support from Yao's management team.

    Hi, John,

I have been out of town for the last week, and I am very sad to read that you may be leaving this site for good.

Like many of your readers here, I have been reading and visiting this site since the very beginning. In fact, I looked forward to reading your updates of the games in my office and it was one of the must-do's for me no matter how busy I was. And I have been really amazed at how much enthusiasm and energy you have in getting the updates to your readers. I really appreciate for all the time and efforts you have put in and I wish you all the best.

Hopefully, Yao and company would understand the importance of this great site and decide to do something to keep this going. There is no other better way for Yao's fans from all over the world to come and discuss his achievements.

    All the best, John!

    Hi John,

Thank for all your hard work for all these years. I have been coming to this site since the beginning. Basketball is just a game. You must do what is best for you and your family.

I am disappointed that Yao hasn't financially supported this site, but unfortunately, I am not surprised.

I am grateful for your service and we will all miss you!

    John,

I have been this site since you started it. Though I never wrote any comments, I have been visiting this site for detailed info a lot. I always marvel your ability to spend so much time to do such a wonderful job. I really appreciate you did and really hate you decide to fold.

I do hope you can blog every now and then to keep the site alive. The detailed analysis is not really necessary. Not sure how many people would read that much detail, especially after 6 years' of yao.

Good luck and thank you very much!

    John,
sad to hear it, but fully understandable. I've followed this site since the start, can't believe it has been 6,5 years already. Thank's also for you bothering to answer my mails directly!

This is the best, if not only, site for Yao fans, bare none. At least in English.

I wish you good luck in your life and hope that you will still write a couple of times in a month, like a summary or something :)

I can't believe that Team Yao don't understand the value of this site. On the otherside, it makes you independent and you can write anything without worrying to be censored by team Yao :)

To all those that say Yao is declining: Guy's it is only SIX games into the season, Yao has only played bad TWO GAMES. He just killed Dallas a couple of days ago. I can't believe you.

Hi Wendy, thanks for the compliments, and thanks to all of you who have responded so kindly knowing I don't have enough time to thank all of you enough individually. Fortunately I have all of your email addresses, so if something happens where I can start writing again, I'll notify you through email. In fact, if you want to be alerted, I recommend just responding here, or send an email to alerts@yaomingmania.com. -- Thanks again, all!

I've been a silent reader since the 1st season and this is my first post and alas it's to say Goodbye .

As a chinese person, it's not easy for me to make this statement, but I'll say that you're alright for a Japaness person :-)) Hey, you may not take it as much of a compliment but I will tell you there are a lot of emotions in that little statment.

Anyways, thanks for your hard work and I hope you find success in whatever your new pursuit might be.

John, what a disappointing news. But I can fully understand. Thank you for all your dedication and efforts in the past 6.5 year, this site is amazing and one of the best sites I even seen. Deep from my heart, I wish you all the best and good luck. And I really wish YMM can get some financial support for its continue operation, so yao fans can have a place called family.

I followed this site since you first created it when Yao joined the NBA. It was very entertaining and felt like a real online community. You put tremendous effort in YMM and it showed. Hey John
I been an active member of your forum and site since Yao's rookie year and followed what's been happening on this site for all those years. I remember when I was a kid back in 2002 as a fan of Yao and had no chance to watch Rockets games because I live on the other side of the world and streaming wasn't invented back then. All i could rely on was this forum and your post game analysis. So thank you so much for that. You put in so much effort into this site and I (along with many other people) really appreciate it.

You have made a site where people can discuss information and news on Yao and other Asian prospects. Basically, you have created a community for Asians (and everyone else of course) where we were able to discuss anything regarding sports, politics and news. I know that some of the political debates got quite racial and heated but I hope you wont hold it against us and still have good impression of us. Your forum has been great, it's the only forum which I have ever been an active member on, it's the type of place myself and many others here feel a part of because we all share the same interest. So thank you so much for making this possible for us. Hope you great success in your life.

Thank you for all you've done through these years. I know Yao Ming and all the fans are very proud of your fine work on this site. Hopefully you've find yourself back here someday.

    John,

Like everything else in life, all good things come to an end. It's hard to believe you have dedicated 6.5 years of your life doing YMM. I fully understand your predicament. There's a point in time when you have to move in a new direction if the things that you do start to affect your life and health in a negative way. Your life and family come first.

Anyway, like everyone here on this board, I really enjoy reading your excellent posts and game analysis. They're second to none. If this is the end, I hope you find happiness and good fortune with whatever you do. Along with Raymond, you deserve our appreciation and admiration forever.

    Hi John,

I live and work in France, YMM along with Rockets.com are the only two sites that I read after every Rockets game. It has become a comfortable routine for me.

I clearly remember the early excitement when Yao just joined the NBA and the passionate analysis that you put up after everyone of his important games. Those shot (made/miss) diagrames you painstakingly did in the wee hours were worth every second of your time because it made fans like myself who don't get to watch rockets games live (France don't cover the NBA) follow the up and downs of the big man.

So you can imagine my disappointment when I read that you are stopping for reasons that I completely agree with.

I wish you all the best and I just wanted you to know that your past work on this site has been terrific and time I spent on your site has been worthwhile.

A big thank you to you.

    cheers,

    Peng

    John,

Sad to see you leave us but fully respect your decision. You have done far more than you have to in this in providing valuable inside info and detail game analysis on Yao and I thank you wholeheartedly.

Like many had said, your game analysis and keen obsevation are far better than many other so called pros!

I just didnt noticce that it was 6.5 years that I have been surfing this site ever since Yao was in NBA, time flies and once again, get a decent personally life and return yourself to a dedicated Yao fan like us ! bit just in case, if you got time, drop a few words on the site to let us how have been doing.

Until then, I wish you best of luck, health, life et al

I am surprised to learn that Yao is not concerned about the existence of this site at all. If this site is to fold, the biggest victim is Yao himself, not John or the fans.

However, I can imagine that Yao himself is not getting the right advices he deserves. Yao is just like one of those Emporors in the old Chinese dynasties. Such Emporors are surrounded by mostly wicked servants or Officials, whose advices are made to the interests of the Officials themselves rather than those of the Emporors or the nation.

Take it easy, John. It is nothing new, but just history repeating itself.

However, the world is immense. If they think that you are not important in the Yao circle, I am sure your importance will be felt elswhere.

But I sincerely hope that this site can continue to exist.

John, good luck with your career.

Hey Sup John my man. I knew this day would come. I mean it's tough. The video's you have to go back and watch and replay then to write in detail about. It's a lot of brain power you are generating. It's physically draining and mentally draining. Then you gotta go and worry about work the next day. AND that's only after a couple of hours of sleep after disecting Yao's game from the previous night. So definately props to you for keeping it up for 6 plus years. Go do what you gotta do and take care of ya self you hear. But before I leave I just need to say one thing that everyone is afraid to say all these years. John, I love ya for what you did for Yao and sticking up for what you believe in. But I hate to say this but I think Yao has reached his limit. It won't get any better then last year before his injury. He has no lift to his game anymore so he will never be a great rebounder especially at the end of crucial games. He needs to learn balance and the art of positioning when it comes to blocking out his man to receive the ball in the low post. He needs to learn how to back his man up with more dribbles and use his body wisely to create a shot in the post other then just one dribble and flick it up. John I hate to say this but our man Yao is on the decline. I love em and I want him to succeed but it is what it is. Let me know what you think for the last time and you take good care of yourself brotha!

Thanks for the kind words, Bobby. Because I haven't been able to watch the past 2 games, it's tough for me to make an assessment on Yao's game this season. But from what the coaches were saying during training camp, there's not much to worry about. And he looked good during the Olympics even playing at 80%. It's not bad if he's reached his limit, though, because it's still better than most other centers in the league. And being able to shoot 85% from the FT line is always valuable if he gets fouled alot. But we'll see. -- John

John, all I can say is, thanks for all your work. I've been following since the beginning, and all Yao fans have been better for it.

Hi, John. I've been though a lot of things in the past six years, but visiting YMM has been a constant. I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into this site. We ymmers can't really thank you enough for creating such a wonderful site. Hopefully something will get worked out and you can get some nice reward, if not, do whatever you got to do for the best interests of yourself. Take care and sayonara

I am surprised that Yao's people couldn't help find a source of revenue for you. The down economy must be taking a toll on even the supposed recession-proof sports industry.

Hope you return soon with some sponsorship.

    Hey, John ---

No worries man, I've always marveled at your ability to do this on a part-time/hobby (in terms of compensation, not in terms of the time you've put in) basis. I think you can always come back and blog once a week or so. Perhaps you can approach the big man himself for some support?

If this is the final good-bye, then it has been a great 6 and 1/2 yrs reading your blog and this site is one of my most visited sites. As the saying in Chinese, "there is no never-ending banquet", I knew this day would have come sooner or later.

Good luck to you in your endeavors and go Rockets!

John - this is disappointing news, but I completely understand. Thanks so much for all the great coverage all these years. Your reporting have been a favorite part of my life.

Yao, if you are reading, please sponsor John and his work. It is the best source of Yao news on the internet. The interest this site generates for you must be worth something. A dedicated fan like John is rare and priceless, and should be supported.

And frankly, the Yao Mania posts are the best part of the official "Club Yao" fan site. Yao has not updated his journal in years. And the signed picture I ordered from the store more than a year ago still has not arrived. Without Yao Mania, Club Yao is pretty unimpressive.

Thank you John for yours tireless posts of the countless Rockets games on this site. It has truly been a pleasure to read your well written thoughts and opinions on every game along with other Rockets fans. I'm sure many will agree that your commentary on the games are better than those of online sportswriters. Hope this isn't a permanent goodbye, and good luck with all the things going on in your life. Once again a heartfelt thanks for bringing us fans news of Yao and the Rockets for many wonderful seasons.

wassup John just want to congratulate you on a great 6 1/2 year run at this site. I've been an avid member since Yao's rookie season and couldn't find a better hands-on site on the big fella than this one ever since. I really hope this is not the end of YMM and I'm confident that it won't be. Until then wish you best of luck with all ur endeavors and again a big thank you for making everything possible.

Thanks for everything and the dedication for the many expats around the world who want an inside scoop, and this site about Yao Ming was as premier as any.

Best of luck to your future and Texas

Thanks for your hard work and dedication, John.

Thank you, Shawn. And thanks to everyone below this comment who has given me a compliment (it would take too long to respond to each comment). I'm overwhelmed and humbled with everyone's kind words.

By the way, I must say that without Raymond's dedication, YMM wouldn't have been near as successful. -- John
