Yao to work on conditioning in China, will miss start of Rox training camp

Yao Ming rejoined the Chinese National Team on Wednesday after a busy week involving the Yao & Nash Charity Gala and Basketball game, as well as a few commercial activities.

In an interview with Wang Meng, Yao said he realizes he can still improve his conditioning. He’s fine on offense with the ball in the low post, but he is still 1 or 2 steps slow on defense as seen by getting beaten by Yi Jianlian and Zhang Songtao during scrimmages.

He plans to make use of the next two weeks where the Chinese will play seven exhibition games against teams from Italy, Russia, and Australia.

Because of a commitment he has to be part of the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics in China on October 2nd, he will miss the first 2-3 days of the Rockets training camp in Austin.

I don’t have a problem with that. He will have played seven of those games already, much more than his Rocket teammates. And being a global ambassador of the Special Olympics, it would be a big deal if he missed those Opening Ceremonies.

Thanks to Raymond in China for the scoop, and for these photos he posted in the YaoMania! forum of Yao with his Chinese teammates in practice.

Although Yao Ming will be playing for team China in most of the exhibition games and Yi Jianlian, my question is will both of them play on Oct. 18 when the Magic play against the CNT? Also, is Wang Zhizhi playing for Bayi Rockets next season or is he playing in Europe? Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

I doubt very seriously Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian will play for the CNT during that October 18th game. Once they start playing for their US teams, even in preseason games, they’re out of national team commitments. That’s been the case for other NBA players who have national team commitments, like Dirk (Germany), Arroyo (Puerto Rico), etc.

Don’t know about Wang ZhiZhi and his plans. Anyone else out there know?

Yao and Yi won’t play for CNT during the China-NBA Challenge. There were talks of Wang Zhizhi going to Europe earlier right after the NBA Summer League. Now the talks have died down and I assume that the Army will not let Wang go play abroad again. But you never know…

Thank you for responding back my comment. Anyways, I forgot about Sun Yue who was drafted #40 with the Lakers, is he going to be signed by the Lakers soon or is he going to play in the ABA or NBDL league? Aww I wish Yao and Yi could play in the NBA CHINA GAMES because once both of them leave, Team China only has Wang Zhizhi at Center and Mo Ke, Zhang Songtao and Ding Jinhui.
