Updated: 2006-09-28 09:06
Basketball megastar Yao Ming has been presented an award by the University of Houston as part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the University's Asian American Studies Center.
Yao Ming was presented with the award. September,27, 2006. [sina.com]
The award is a testimony of Yao's contribution to the development of the integration between Asian and American cultures.
Zou Yali, director of the center, says Yao Ming has brought a new light to this developing relationship.
She notes, Yao Ming is one of the most successful global figures who inspire millions of young people to achieve their dreams in many ways. He highly values education and provides scholarships for under-privileged students to attend university.
Yao Ming donated his jersey and raised 1,300 US dollars at auction. Two basketballs with Yao's signature have collected a total of 3,700 US dollars.
Proceeds from the gala will help further fund the development of Asian American Studies courses, research projects, study-abroad and scholar-exchange programs, and community activities. |

I agree. Like those in the media, in times of inactivity, people feel the need to create stories, or create discussions. Yao not "dressing up for chinese" is someone making an unwarranted comment just to stir up discussion.
Yao is human and not perfect. However, having said that, there's nothing that has been recorded in his very public life to to dispel the character of a person that is very hard working, very proper, as well as cunning and savvy. He's image conscious as most people, but I think he actually knows what he's doing and how to come off.
Look to the attire of the surrounding audience. If it is a black tie event, then the custom and ettiquette is to dress up. If your host does not dress up, then as a guest you do not dress up or show up your host. Is those pictures, most people are dressed up. If half the people are dressed up and half the people aren't, then you have choices.
Some reporters poke and prod at people to get a reaction. Works for them, you get a reaction you get a story. You don't have a story, you don't get paid, you don't get work. Some reporters poke using peaceful tactics(kissing up, being buddy, respresent charities or big media corporations) and other negative tactics(hounding, repetitive picture snapping, insults). Nothing here is out of the ordinary. |

Like previous seasons of 2004 and 2005, when I created and posted in the Official Thread of Yao Ming's Summer Activities, it usually comprised of ALL Yao Ming's off season activities in Houston and China, all the way up till the beginning of the next new season.
So "Summer" basically implies "Off Season" activities.
There is still 3 to 4 days to go BEFORE the "summer" ends, when the training camp starts..... |
