So today (May 28 ), 5 MORE players got the marching order, packed, and can go home fishing......

  • Han Shuo of Jiangsu Nangang Dragon (Williamshi888's favorite player)
  • Yang Ming of Liaoning Panpan Hunters
  • Xu Guozhong of Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers
  • Han Dejun of Liaoning Panpan Hunters
  • Zhang Songtao of Beijing Aoshen Olympians.
Bob Donewald Jr. comments for the 5 of them:

  • Yang Ming has alot to work on his skills when compared to players in the same position;

  • Same for Han Shuo; if he wants to be reinstated into the national team, he needs to work and improve on all areas of his skills

  • Bob Donewald Jr. wanted to give more opportunities to young players on the team, so he talked the 29-year-old Xu Guozhong into voluntarily giving up his position in the team.

  • Bob Donewald Jr. said he likes Han Dejun, cos he gave energy and sparks in very short time span on court, but his current body condition and physical strengths did not meet the requirements of the national team. He added that Han is young and without experience, but if he continues to work hard, he would be surprised not to see him again on the national team in 2 years time.

  • As for Zhang Songtao, Bob Donewald Jr. said he like his centres to be more blue collar players (like Su Wei and Tang Zhengdong) who would shoulder all the dirty work in defense, rebounding and shot blocking. Besides he wants to give more opportunity to the younger centres.

So other than Yao Ming, Yi Jianlian, Zhu Fangyu and Wang Shipeng who up till now cannot join the national team training, the national team roster is cut down to 17 players.

There will be 1 1/2 days of rest for the player this afternoon and tomorrow.

Then the national team will depart Beijing for Beilun, Ningbo on May 30 (Sunday) for 2 weeks of closed door training. Unlike the previous week which was purely on no-ball strength and conditioning exercises, this 2 weeks' training will focus on game strategies/set plays, with 5 vs 5 team scrimmages.

Then right after the exhibition games series with the Argentina national team in mid June,
there will be the 3rd cut on June 22nd which will reduce the 21-player roster to 15 players (including Yao, Yi, Zhu and Wang).

The Final 12 will then be decided from this 15 players eventually.

Bob Donewald Jr. also made one of his BOLD moves by deciding to promote Guo Ailin from the U17 national team to the senior team !!! Shocked

http://sports.sina.com.cn/cba/2010-05-28/13535007612.shtml

From the above sina.com article, it was revealed that Bob Donewald Jr. went to watch the U17 national team in training last week.

After watching Guo Ailun in training, he made the request to CBA to have Guo Ailun join the senior team in training, right after the FIBA U17 World Championship in Germany (July 2 to July 11).

If the report is GENUINE, then Guo Ailun will become the second player after Chen Jianghua that made the jump to the senior national team without playing for CBA.

So the following 22 players remain on the roster, with 10 players to be dropped for the Final 12 for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

Personally think, it will be a severe and stern contest amongst the above players.

The end result could be the Final 12 for the 2010 FIBA World Championship (without Yao Ming) will contain say 8 veterans + 4 young players, with the aim to phase out some of the older players.

Then by the time comes for the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, with Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian left out of the squad, another 2 veterans will be replaced by young players.

Then by the time of 2011 Asian Championship, the national team should have been revamped, and Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian will be asked to return to lead the national team to win the Championship to qualify for 2012 London Olympics.

Ahahahaha, actually within that list of five, my favourite would be Han *fatty* Dejun. Imagine if he can lose some of those fat and turn them into muscles, could be a serious contender on the world stage. Han is like a younger Tang Zhendong but minus the laziness.

I am quite amazed at how Zhang Bo, Yu Shulong and Gong Songlin managed to stay on the team.

I'm surprised that Tang Zhengdong had yet to be cut. He was snail slow and ran the slowest in all the 22 players in the strength and conditioning sessions. Even Han "Fatty" Dejun ran faster than him. And his work ethic and professionalism is notoriously bad. He got fined for over-sleeping and missing flights, stayed outside overnight violating team curfews, and faking injury and not giving his all in the Jiangsu Nangang Dragons this past season.

There were rumors spreading amongst the fans that the reason for Zhang Bo, Gong Songlin and Max Zhang Zhaoxu remaining on the roster was that they belong to the SAME agent, Lu Hao, of Beijing Starz International Sports Management Co., Ltd, incidentally, member of Team Yao, Yao Ming's agent in China, and currently the General Manager of Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks.

IMHO, the reason for Yu Shulong still remaining in the roster was that of all the guards, only Liu Wei is pure point guard. Zhang Qingpeng and Zhang Bo are combo guards that play on position 1 and 2; Sun Yue can play in position 1, 2 and 3; Meng Duo and Wang Shipeng play only on position 2; Gong Songlin swings between position 2 and 3; Guo Ailun is a combo that plays on both positions.

Yu Shulong plays pure point guard in his CBA team, I believe.

As Bob Donewald Jr. wants to emulate what he did at Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks by playing 2 to 3 guards at the same time,
probably that's WHY he needs to retain Yu Shulong for longer period of observations as backup for Liu Wei.

Besides he is young, and maybe Bob Donewald Jr. wants to comb and develop him for future tournaments, say 2012 London Olympics. After all both Liu Wei and Zhang Qingpeng will be 30 something by 2012.

They need to get rid of some of these folks that can play only one position. "I can't pass, dribble, and I'm a chucker"
