HOUSTON -- Tracy McGrady is once again stepping up to the plate for a local elementary school.
The Rockets' seven-time All-Star will host the third annual T-Mac Celebrity Softball Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 4 to benefit the renovation of a reading and learning center at Kashmere Gardens Elementary School in Houston.
During last year's charity softball event, the Tracy McGrady Foundation raised more than $150,000 to construct a new technology center and library at Betsy Ross Elementary School.
McGrady visited the school Thursday to begin raising money for his next project and to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new facility that he helped build.
He was impressed with the new area.
"I didn't know what to envision," McGrady said. "This is unbelievable. They have laptops. I don't even have a laptop. This looks better than my office at home. I'm proud that it turned out this way."
The room features new furniture, reference materials, 30 laptop computers, hardwood floors and tons of T-Mac memorabilia.
David Terrell, principal at Ross Elementary School, said McGrady's assistance has meant the world to his students.
"It's given the students a chance to be able to compete -- with high-tech computers and updated books -- with students from other districts and around the region no matter what their economic and social circumstances are at home," Terrell said. "This library is going to make a major impact on our students' academic achievement."
McGrady's visit to the elementary school also marked the first time that he visited with the media since Rick Adelman was named the franchise's new coach. The Rockets star said he was looking forward to playing under Adelman's offensive system.
"I'm looking to play off the ball a little more," McGrady said. "I'm hoping that I can get more easy transition baskets. I used to hate playing against Sacramento when Rick was the coach there because there was so much movement in the offense. That's what I'm really looking forward to. I'm looking forward to getting some easy baskets."
McGrady added that he's pleased with the moves that the organization has made since the season ended, but he believes the Rockets still need to make a few more before training camp.
"We don't have a power forward right now except for Chuck Hayes," said McGrady, referring to the free agent forward. "I'm sure the organization is working on getting us a power forward and I still think we need a guy on the perimeter that can create. We did get Mike James and he can do that. We also need a guy that can rebound. The organization is aware of it and I'm sure they're working on it."
McGrady's primary focus, however, was on the new facility that he helped build. The star said he's hoping that his upcoming softball tournament will make his next project just as successful.
"I understand that I'm inspirational to these kids and I don't want to let them down," McGrady said. "I want them to succeed." |
