Yao Ming should change the state sports system for basketball and soccer. He should also mentor young big basketball players.

Why he assume that Yao has so many obligations is totally beyond ordinary people's logical thinking.

I am interested in his logics on these "Yao should do this, Yao should do that" types of statements.

Either trolling, attention-seeking, disability, or immaturity. Your choice, hard to tell which.

Well, Yao Ming is not obligated to do anything. But who in China is more qualified to teach the young big basketball players? Who has the invaluable knowledge and international professional experience? It would be a waste if such advance basketball knowledge and skills are not transferred to the young players.

Even Bateer, Yi Jianlian and Wang zhizhi should find a way of transferring their skills and NBA knowledge to the younger players.

Tracy McGrady's deal with Qingdao Double Star Eagles had hit an unexpected road block.

CBA had signed a new multi-million endorsement contract with Li Ning & Co. for the new season.

Under the new endorsement deal, all CBA teams must wear gears (jerseys and shoes) provided by Li Ning & Co..

For players that have endorsements from other vendors, they need to take either one of the following 3 options:

  • Wear Li Ning's shoes/jerseys
  • Wear original endorser's shoes/jerseys but have the logo concealed/hidden
  • Pay CBA a fee up to US$ 800K and can continue to wear original endorser's gears.
As Tracy McGrady is still bounded by an Adidas endorsement, it is UNLIKELY Adidas will allow Tracy McGrady to wear Li Ning or have its logo concealed, or willing to pay US$ 800K for Tracy McGrady.

So it will either be the club Qingdao Double Star Eagles paying CBA the fee or Tracy McGrady himself pays it out of his own pocket.

But it will be difficult for either side to do that, as on Tracy McGrady's side, his agent was saying that he had already made huge concession to agree to a contract of about US$ 1 Million to play for Qingdao, and on Qingdao Double Star Eagles side, they might also have to think twice if they need to spend another US$ 800K on Tracy McGrady.

So it remains to be seen how the issue can be satisfactorily solved before Tracy McGardy can officially sign the contract with Qingdao Double Star Eagles.
.

The final road block had been removed !!! :P

Qingdao Double Star Eagles threw a press conference on October 13 to announce they have officially signed 1 year contract with Tracy McGrady.

As for the shoe issue, Qingdao Double Star Eagles called for meeting with CBA officials, Li Ning & Co., Adidas China, as well as with Tracy McGrady's team in USA over telephone conference.

It seemed like there had been a compromise between all parties; in Li Ning's agreement with CBA, every major vendor had one exemption, i.e. 1 player in CBA can wear the vendor's shoes during CBA game. Other than that player, the other players have to pay US$ 800K to CBA/Li Ning to be allowed to wear the vendor's shoes.

So it will be up to Adidas China to decide whether they will allot their exemption quota to Tracy McGrady, which now it seems Adidas China will do so, cos TMAC should be the only super star in CBA that has an Adidas endorsement. Sun Yue and other CBA players might have Adidas endorsements, but they could not be in the position to compete with TMAC in terms of getting the eye-ball attention that Adidas wants; beside Sun Yue could not play in CBA.

So that solved the problem.

Some other details of TMAC's contract were disclosed:

  • The contract is about US$ 800K to 1M for 1 year, with Qingdao Double Star Eagles having the first right of refusal to re-sign TMAC after 1 year.
  • TMAC has to play for the entire season (including the playoff), meaning if Qingdao Double Star Eagles make it to the playoff in March, he has to stay to play.
  • TMAC will be provided an apartment or a suite in a 5-star hotel in Qingdao as his residence.
  • TMAC will bring along his team (2 agents, 1 personal assistant and 1 body guard) from USA. Nothing disclosed about whether TMAC or Qingdao Double Star Eagles will be footing the bills (the salaries and accommodation of TMAC's team).
  • In order to prevent incidents of JR Smith happening (i.e. forfeiting games and skipping daily practices), it is written into the contract that TMAC will be penalized US$ 10K for skipping a practice and US$ 50K for skipping a game without legitimate reasons (illness or injuries).
  • TMAC requested Qingdao Double Star Eagles to hire a chef for him for Western food; TMAC will shoulder the salary/expense for the chef.
  • On road trips, TMAC is to live together with his team mates in whatever class of hotels the team arranges for him. But he and his team will be allowed to book a SUV (on Qingdao Double Star Eagles expenses) for their transportation.
  • TMAC would also be given allowance for a couple of round-trip tickets in order he wants to return to USA to see his family or his family wants to visit him in China on certain Chinese holidays (e.g. Christmas/New Year and Chinese New Year break)
