Tracy McGrady's deal with Qingdao Double Star Eagles had hit an unexpected road block.

CBA had signed a new multi-million endorsement contract with Li Ning & Co. for the new season.

Under the new endorsement deal, all CBA teams must wear gears (jerseys and shoes) provided by Li Ning & Co..

For players that have endorsements from other vendors, they need to take either one of the following 3 options:

  • Wear Li Ning's shoes/jerseys
  • Wear original endorser's shoes/jerseys but have the logo concealed/hidden
  • Pay CBA a fee up to US$ 800K and can continue to wear original endorser's gears.
As Tracy McGrady is still bounded by an Adidas endorsement, it is UNLIKELY Adidas will allow Tracy McGrady to wear Li Ning or have its logo concealed, or willing to pay US$ 800K for Tracy McGrady.

So it will either be the club Qingdao Double Star Eagles paying CBA the fee or Tracy McGrady himself pays it out of his own pocket.

But it will be difficult for either side to do that, as on Tracy McGrady's side, his agent was saying that he had already made huge concession to agree to a contract of about US$ 1 Million to play for Qingdao, and on Qingdao Double Star Eagles side, they might also have to think twice if they need to spend another US$ 800K on Tracy McGrady.

So it remains to be seen how the issue can be satisfactorily solved before Tracy McGardy can officially sign the contract with Qingdao Double Star Eagles.

Yao Ming will probably pay that for his buddy T-Mac when T-Mac plays for Yao Ming's Shanghai team.

NAAAAAAAH he won't cos Yao Ming would not have considered signing TMAC in first place.

Yao Ming was asked sometimes earlier whether he would consider signing ex NBA super stars like The Answer (Allen Iverson), Agent Zero (Gilbert Arenas) or TMAC for Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks; his answer was a FLAT NO, and he quipped that the cage (CBA) is just this big, why should one try to lure in a big falcon??

He said some of his cirteria for expat selection:

  • The guy must be of the right mix of positional skills set required for the team;
  • he must be of great price-performance competitiveness;
  • the player has to be a team player with good work ethics, and nice personality to get along, mix, gel with the young players of the team;
He stressed that when he considered hiring an expat player, it had to be that the expat player meets the long term strategical/tactical development requirements of his team, and that he should not be blocking/impeding the growth and development of other young players on his team.
He said it would be foolish to splash $$$$$$$$$$$ onto ex NBA super stars, that could only help boosting the box office/gate receipts of the team in the short term, but create alot of on-court or off-court problems/headaches for the club; he said some of those ex NBA super stars had some unrealistic expectations of CBA, and most CBA clubs would find it difficult to accommodate those ever-demanding ex NBA super stars.

Beijing won the championship with Stephon Marbury. Shanghai needs to do something to win the championship. Can't rely on Max Zhang to win the championship for Shanghai.

Well, the ULTIMATE goal for Yao Ming is NOT REALLY about winning the CBA Championship for his Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks.

He said that when he took over the Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks 3 years ago.

He stated OPENLY that he did not see a future for Chinese basketball, with CBA teams RELYING TOO MUCH on expat players. He said the future of Chinese basketball lies with the young Chinese players and not some ex NBA stars that were well over their prime, and were in China for their last bucket of gold.

He wants to build a team, a franchise that could last for 100 years, that the Shanghainese will be proud of. He wants his Shanghai Sharks be like Guangdong Dongguan Bank Hongyuan Tigers that put alot of efforts into development of young players with talents and potentials; He also wants his players to get involved and be active with the community, and constantly feedback to the society through their charity acts.

He wants to popularize the sport of basketball to all, including revolutionizing the state systems to bring the sport to school children. To that end, Big Yao had recently entered into agreement with major primary and secondary schools in Shanghai that he would sponsor and organize summer training camps for them, and if there are young players of potential and talent, his Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks would recruit them to his junior teams.

Yao Ming has LARGER ASPIRATIONS than just winning CBA Championship for his Shanghai franchise.
