The defending champion Dallas Mavericks were playing away to Houston Rockets.

Yao Ming and his family (wife Ye Li and lovely little Amy) were there at the courtside to cheer and rave support for the Rockets.

Yao Ming met his national team mate Yi Jianlian in the players' corridor prior to the game, and had a short chat.

But Big Yao's presence did not bring Yi Jianlian or the Houston Rockets any luck.

Yi Jianlian was DNP
and did not get any play minutes other than some pre-game shoot-out practice.

And despite a gallant effort from the Rockets, they eventually lost a heart-breaker 101 ~ 99 in over time to Dallas Mavericks after a clutch 3-pointer from Chandler Parsons seconds before regular time forced the game into over time.

People/fans in China had been wondering/speculating why Yao Ming had to apply for leave of absence from his Shanghai Jiaotong University studies and went back to Houston.

I think I have found out the REASON WHY.

It was for both PRIVATE and DIPLOMATIC reason.

We all remembered that back in December 2011, Yao Ming was appointed Vice Chairman and Honorary Ambassador of the newly established Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association, a pseudo-governmental unit under the Shanghai Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultation Conference, which aims to do alot of public diplomacy work to promote the Shanghai municipality to the world.

http://www.yaomingmania.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=405782#405782

A Shanghai delegation comprised of members from the Information Office of Shanghai Municipality and the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association is currently visiting their sister cities of Chicago and Houston in the United States.

On March 22, the Information Office of Shanghai Municipality and Houston Chief Development Office signed the Memorandum of Exchange and Braodcast Promotional Videos in Houston City Hall.

And on that night, the relevant people from the delegation including Yao Ming and his family were invited to a reception thrown by Xu Erwen, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Houston.

So possibly Yao Ming went back to Houston as a member of the Shanghai delegation to be present in all the above activities.

Also since his parents and his daughter Amy had been staying in Houston for the past few months, he and Ye Li could just make use of this opportunity to go back and spend some time with Amy there.

in U.S. Sister-Cities

By Huang Wei

March 23, 2012

Project of exchanging and broadcasting city image videos openes a new model of international inter-city exchange

On March 22th local time, the images of the Bund, Lujiazui, Xintiandi and other iconic landmarks of Shanghai appeared on the electronic screen of a visitors' center in Houston, United States, capturing the attention of passers-by. Meanwhile, the electronic screen at George R. Brown Convention Center, a public television channel and two mainstream websites (www.globalhouston.org and www.houstontx.gov/intltrade) simultaneously broadcasted the Shanghai promotional video.

Since Shanghai and Houston signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on April 1, 2005, the two cities have jointly carried out projects in various fields including the economy, trade, technology and medicine.

Recently the two cities started the cooperation in cities' image communication. Information Office of Shanghai Municipality and Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association have consulted and reached agreement with relevant departments in Houston.

The Information Office of Shanghai Municipality and Houston Chief Development Office signed the Memorandum of Exchange and Broadcast Promotional Videos in Houston City Hall in the morning of March 22. Under the agreement, Shanghai will also broadcast Houston's promotional video on electronic screens in Xintiandi and Xujiahui Stadium. The video will be also broadcasted on the International Channel Shanghai and two websites (www.eastday.com and official website of Information Office of Shanghai Municipality,www.shio.gov.cn) and will last for a period of six months based on the principle of reciprocity.

Shanghai’s delegation also signed another Memorandum of Cross Promotion with Chicago city On March 21 in Chicago, United States. According to the agreement, the two cities will exchange and broadcast each other's videos via various multimedia channels including electronic screens and television media started from May this year.

It is reported that Information Office of Shanghai Municipality will continue to work with Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association to actively explore and expand this new model of global intercity exchange.

Yao Ming is currently in Boao of Hainan .

For the second consecutive year in running, Yao Ming was invited to attend the Young Leaders Roundtable at the 2012 Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference that officially commenced today.

The theme of this afternoon’s Roundtable was about the definition of Happiness and how young people/leaders can contribute to a happy society/country.

The Roundtable was comprised of 20 “young” leaders from China, US, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, India and included such heavyweights as Li Xiaolin, CEO of China Power International Development (Li is the daughter of former Chinese premier Li Peng); Lief Johansson, Chairman of Ericsson, Roger Barnett, CEO and Chairman of Shaklee, Paul Haenle, Director of Carnegie Tsinghua Centre in Beijing (Haenle was former executive assistant to US National Security adviser on Chinese matters), Jennifer Qin, Lead Partner of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Asia Pacific, Lu Chuan, famous Chinese movie director, and other senior executives/CEOs of investment banks and telcom companies of China, and deputy dean of the business school from Qinghua University, party secretary of Yangzhou City, and Deputy Chairman of the Youth Union of Anhui Province.

The session was like a brain storming session with each participant took turn to talk about their definition of happiness and will talk of one project or activities they will undertake in the summer to make people around them happier.

When it was Yao Ming’s turn, Yao Ming said to him happiness is pretty abstract, floating between an upper ceiling and a bottom line. He said as the bottom line, from the social perspective, the government should strive to keep improving the quality of education, health care, social welfare etc to make the citizens happier. He stressed that he wanted to elaborate a bit on the upper ceiling.

He said people have to control one’s ambition/desire/aspiration. He said ambition/desire/aspiration are good cos they trigger competition and are what created great civilizations and advanced societies; but if individual could not keep his/her ambition/desire/aspiration for fame and riches under control, it will become greed, and endless greed will bring about crimes, which is something he does not want to see.

He then talked about the project that he is working on for this summer to make people around him happier. It is the project that Yao Ming Foundation will co-operate with BMW China to organize a national youth basketball league for over 40 some Project Hope Schools nation-wide. He hoped through basketball, the young kids/lads, whether boys or girls, will learn things about team work, sportsmanship, comradeship, hard work, things that they won’t learn from the books in classrooms. Such experience will bring them memories and friendship and happiness as they grow up.

Photos of Yao Ming at today's 2012 Boao Forum For Asia Annual Conference during the Young Leaders Roundtable brainstorming session, as well as some of the networking/socializing chats/photos with some of the Roundtable participants.

The spectacled foreigner in one of the photos chatting with Big Yao is Lief Johansson, Chairman of Ericsson.

And in the last photo, China's premier-in-waiting Li Keqiang was seen talking with Yao Ming when he greeted all the participants of the Young Leaders Roundtable.
