For the first time in their corporate history, SAP, the German IT giant had combined its two most important conferences: SAPPHIRE NOW, their premier customer conference, and SAP TechEd, SAP's largest technical and ecosystem education event series, and the two conferences were held as co-located events in Madrid, Spain, from November 8-10, and Beijing, China at the Beijing National Convention Centre from November 15-17.

With SAPPHIRE NOW, SAP offers its customers, partners and prospects even more opportunities to engage in dialogue with peers, participants and thought leaders around the globe, and can gain insight as to how SAP is delivering on its product strategy and helping organizations around the world to run better, while SAP TechEd brings IT managers, software developers, administrators and business process experts together for a look under the hood of today's business motors: the latest advances in in-memory computing technology, cloud computing, mobility and analytics from SAP and its partners.

For this major event in China, SAP invited 6 heavyweights to give keynote speeches.

On Day 1, i.e. yesterday, Mr. Zhang Ruimin, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Haier Group, one of China's most successful manufacturer/exporter of electrical home appliances and one of SAP's major customer in China, Mr. Hasso Plattner, SAP's co-founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Ms. Hera K. Siu, SAP China's President delivered their keynote speeches.

Today, on Day 2, it was the turn for Bill McDermott, SAP's co-CEO and member of the Executive Board, and Mr. Vishal Sikka, SAP's Chief Technology Officer and member of the Executive Board.

The last keynote speaker of the day was surprisingly our Yao Ming !!!

Yao Ming gave a talk titled Education and China's Youth,
and according to some of the comments of the 15,000 participants of the conference from their micro-blog (weibo), his talk was very humorous, motivating and was like a breath of fresh air amongst the various very business and technology-oriented keynote speeches of the other 5 keynote speakers. I have yet to get hold of a transcript of what Yao Ming talked about.

But by following the bits and pieces from the comments from participants of the conference on micro-blog/weibo, his talk was not really anything about IT and not even on education.

His talk was strung together with alot of little stories of himself, sort of sharing his past experience growing from a CBA basketballer to a NBA basketballer.

He started his talk referring himself as a former NBA basketballer.

He then said like the Linear Algebra class that he took in his first day back into the university, most of the contents of SAPPHIRE NOW were COMPLETELY CLUELESS to him.

But he stressed the importance of continous learning, and said it is a life-long process of learning and keep improving oneself. He hoped alot of youngsters could pick up that attitude and joined him in seeking ways to learn and improve themselves continuously.

He also said youngsters should cherish every day of their life, and to set achievable targets/goals for themselves. He believed that life is all about setting for oneself phasal achievable targets/goals, and to persist with those goals/targets. The set target/goal will provide the necessary momentum and drive for one to going forward.

He then used himself as an example. He said when he was as young as a 15-year-old, his goal is to become one day a player as good as Wang Zhizhi; he had not dreamed that he could surpass Wang Zhizhi, but all he wanted was to be able to compete with Wang Zhizhi on the court.

He said when he started to play in NBA, he also used Shaquille O'Neal as his target/goal. He said fate had been tolerant with him, allowed him to make mistakes and he considered himself very very fortunate, even though he did not consider his NBA career a success.

He then sort of criticized the Chinese media for projecting too negative an image of the contemporary Chinese youngsters. He said like Yin and Yang of Taichi, there are also positive and negative side of Chinese youngsters. While some Chinese youngsters might be rude, impolite and always showing off their wealth, other Chinese youngsters are hardworking, down-to-earth, willing to help the poor. He urged the society and community to create a good environment for the growth and development for the youngsters, not only the learning environment of education, but also a more tolerant environment to allow young people to make mistakes. And people/society should not judge youngsters for mistakes/errors they made and then write them off completely, which would wreck the future of those youngsters.

Yao Ming also stressed on the importance of team work. He said behind every successful person, there is a good team. Individual success is relatively not as important as team success. Regardless of how talented or wise an individual is, he/she should not neglect or ignore the rest of the team.

He said just like a basketball team, its success does not rely on its 5 starters, but every other players on that team (even the 13th or 14th player that got dropped to form the final 12) that knew their roles, and willing to make sacrifice and give their all to contribute to the success of the team.

He said youngsters might face adversities in their life. All they need is the courage to take responsibility. And on how to overcome difficulties to regain confidence, Yao Ming considered the most important thing is communication: talk with parents, teachers, superiors and peers.

He concluded his speech saying success is only for those who are prepared. He urged all Chinese youngsters to get prepared today for the success of tomorrow.

Yao Ming showed up yesterday afternoon (November 24) in a commercial promotional program of the popular sandwich cookie OREO by the Nabisco Division of Kraft Foods in Shanghai, of which Yao Ming is their image spokesperson/ambassador.

There was a short interview by the master of ceremony.

When asked whether he had skipped class at the Shanghai Jiaotong University to be on the program, Yao Ming quipped that he had attended class that day already; and he joked that his home assignment had been heavy, so he would not have much time to spend and therefore he requested the master of ceremony to be quick with her questions.

When asked about the latest status of his little daughter Amy, and whether she had shown early signs of her athletic genes, Yao Ming said Amy has yet to show she has any athletic genes passed down by her parents, but instead she seems to have some musical talents with her; she likes to sing and swing to the beat of music. Yao Ming quipped musical talents wise, Amy has already surpassed him.

When asked about his life after retirement, he said it is as busy as ever; and the most enjoyable time of his day would be at dinner time, when he can relax and enjoy with his whole family together: his parents, Ye Li, Amy, and sometimes, Ye Li's parents as well.
