This move of Li Ning to tie a strategic co-operative partnership with Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks could indicate they are now in a leading position over other fierce competitors to sign Yao Ming as Yao's Reebok endorsement is coming to an end in 2012.
It was disclosed in yesterday's press conference by Mr. Qian Anke, Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks' deputy general manager that other than Li Ning, Reebok and China Anta were also eager to tie a strategic co-operative partnership with Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks. But according to Qian, all the other competitors just placed too much emphasis on the senior team, and ignore the junior team, and lack of the same kind of long term vision for basketball development in Shanghai region like what Li Ning Co. Ltd. proposed.
Besides, Li Ning showed much more sincerity and the quality of their products, and their concepts, their proposals and offerings excelled that of the competitors. So they decide to go with Li Ning. The whole partnership from conceptualization to negotiation had lasted for over 6 months.
Qian Anke also said although China Anta had the exclusive agreement with CBA that all CBA teams need to wear China Anta gears, it was restricted to on-court competitions. The Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks can wear Li Ning while they are off court.
And in yesterday's press conference, Yao Ming unusually kept a very low profile; he did not give any speech; he refused to accept any interviews afterwards, and he just delegated all the talking to Qian Anke. People speculated that it was all due to the fact that he is still under Reebok contractual obligations.
The only time that Yao Ming was showing some emotions and laughed heartily was when Shaquille O'Neal showed up in the video-telconferencing.

Shaquille O'Neal started addressing Yao Ming by saying, Ni Hao !!! How are you, my brother Yao Ming???
He then said something like Li Ning now owns 2 sharks. The first one is one of the greatest centres in basketball history; the other is Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks, a team owned by another great centre in basketball history. He also said both Li Ning and Yao Ming are the greatest athletes in Chinese sports history and are his best friends, and he sincerely wishes a successful partnership/co-operation between the two. And he concluded by saying if there is any areas that Yao Ming and Li Ning require his help, he will be at their services !!!
Yao Ming was seen here sitting near an inflatable shark in the Bay Area of San Francisco during a break from filming yet another public service announcement (together with a group of school children from the Bay Area) for WildAid about banning shark fin soup in Chinatown in California on May 5, 2011.
