According to Erik Zhamg Mingji, Big Yao's agent, Yao Ming is putting his words to action.

After his forthcoming trip to Australia to be with his Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks participating in the Cable Beach Invitational in Broome of Western Australia, from September 30 to October 1, playing against NBL Perth Wildcats, the Indonesian national team and the Singapore Slingers, Yao Ming will start his university years at Shanghai Jiaotong University.

But due to his popularity and his exceptional height, he won't be actually returning to the classrooms, and instead under special arrangements, professors will go to his home, or he goes to the professors' home for 1-on-1 lectures.

Yao Ming to study in
university:agent

Updated: 2011-09-26 (Xinhua)

SHANGHAI - Former Houston Rockets center Yao Ming will study in the prestigious Shanghai Jiaotong University from October, his agent Zhang Mingji said here on Monday.

Zhang said that Yao has not decided his major but the university will choose special teachers and give the super star lessons on a one-to-one basis.

Yao, who announced to retire from basketball on July 20, said earlier that he had been considering going back to school this fall but did not reveal which school he will choose.

"He is sure to go to Shanghai Jiaotong University in October," Zhang said. "But he has not made up his mind which major he will choose."

Reports said earlier that Yao will major in financial management but Zhang said those are just "speculations."

"Yao has always been learning after retirement," Zhang said. "He has never stopped learning."

Zhang said Yao has thought about having lessons with ordinary students, but this possibility was ruled out because he is worried that his appearance will affect other students.

Zhang added that Yao, like each student in the university, will receive his degree after getting credit and passing necessary examinations.

Why doesn't he stay in US to develop his career rather than going back to China?

WHAT FOR???   :?:

Just to be a second-class citizen???

His roots and relations are ALL there in China.
He has his own team in Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks. And as he had repeatedly reiterated multiple times before, basketball is his love for life, and owning and managing his team and to try to revolutionize and bring changes to the basketball systems in China is to him an extension to his basketball career.

Yao is only graduating from middle school. He has poor knowledge and scientific skills. So if he retires, he can hardly survive in US.

In other words, his academic background is the limitation for his career development. Comparing with Grant Hill, he shouldn't retire so early.

THAT'S WHY he plans to go back to school to earn his degree. even though he had ALREADY one: Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa by Hong Kong University.

BUT REALLY IN REAL LIFE, his lack of formal edcuation won't necessarily limit his career development. He still have a whole team of professionals (Team Yao) working for him, and he has still alot of wise business investments that's starting to reap rewards/harvest to bring him MORE WEALTH. An example: the on-line music website Top100.cn that he invested in 5 to 6 years ago is getting BIGGER AND BIGGER and may very soon go public and listed in NASDAQ.
