SO IT'S FINAL AND IRREVOCABLE !!! :cry:

Yao Ming will not represent China ever again in the national team for future international tournament, including the 2012 London Olympics.
:cry: :cry: :cry:

This afternoon (July 25th), the Chinese Basketball Association organized a Retirement and Commendation Ceremony at National Sports Weightlifting Training Hall in Beijing for Yao Ming.

Xiao Tian, deputy director of the State Sports General Administration (representing Liu Peng, the Minister of the State Sports General Administration, who is away for business in London), Xin Lancheng, CBA Commissioner, Wu Jiashi, Deputy CBA Commissioner, and various other officials were there in the ceremony; alot of Yao Ming former coaches in the national team: Ma Baolin, Jiang Qingquan, Adijiang, Wang Fei were also there.

As the senior national team was in Ningbo in their closed door training preparing for the 2011 FIBA Asian Cahmpionship, they're represented by Fan Bin, the current head coach for China U19 national team, a former national team mate, and room mate of Yao Ming while he served in the national team, and Zhou Peng, who was nursing a wrist injury in Beijing. Players of the newly selected China National Team II were also present.

There were also representatives from the media and Yao Ming fans there. A total of over 200 people witnessed the retirement/commendation ceremony.

In recognition of Yao Ming's contribution to the Chinese sports and in particularly basketball, he was heaped with lots of awards and medals:

  • The State General Administration of Sports awarded him with a Sports Honorary Medal;
  • The Chinese Olympic Committee awarded him with a China Olympic Gold Medal;
  • The Chinese Basketball Association awarded him China Award for Outstanding Contribution to Basketball, and Honorary National Team member for Life.
Originally 3 of his former national team teammates, Liu Wei, Wang Zhizhi, and Li Nan (now the assistant caoch for the national team) were to fly in specifically from Ningbo to award him with his #13 jersey (with the wordings of Honorary National Team member for Life on it), but due to extremely bad weather, their plane had been stranded in Xuzhou, and they could not make it to the venue. Insteads, Wu Jiashi, Deputy CBA Commissioner presented Yao Ming with the national team jersey.

The whole ceremony lasted slightly over an hour.

And right after the Retirement/Commendation Ceremony thrown for him by CBA, an unpredecented farewell ceremony ever thrown for any basketball players or athletes of China, accompanied by officials of State General Administration of Sports and CBA, and Team Yao, Yao Ming went to the People's Great Hall for a short meeting with State Councilor and Central Committee member of the China Communist Party, Liu Yandong.

Liu praised Yao as one of the outstanding representatives of the Chinese athletes of the new era.

She said, "Yao Ming's success wins high praises and respects from the international basketball world, and helps the world know more about China. He is a model of the youth."

Liu also wanted Yao to chase higher goal and use his fame to promote the development of the Chinese sports after he retired.

Liu Yandong then invited Big Yao to a dinner after the meeting.
