Yao Ming was a happy man last night in Pudong Yuanshen Stadium, as he witnessed his Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks beat Bayi Fubong Rockets and Wang Zhizhi, the man he never managed to conquer one-on-one in CBA, in a thriller, a 119 ~ 113 win in over time.

Yao Ming must be very fond of watching those funny joke-cracking show of Zhou Libo, i.e. the host of the TV talk show that he went to earlier in the week.

He took his wife Ye Li to watch Zhou Libo in the famous Majestic Theatre on January 14 night.

He was seen walking normally without his crutches but only on his protective boot.

Obviously he was invited by Zhou Libo for the show, but as it was full house, that addtional seats had to be arranged for him and Ye Li. That's why you see them not sitting together.

And after the show, they went into the back stage and chat with Zhou Libo, and they waited for half an hour or so, such that the spectators would have dispersed and gone before they left for home.

Is Yao betting on those cba games. Why's he getting so excited about his teams games, it's not like they won the championship.

EXACTLY !!!

Besides IMHO, 3 reasons:

  • It is a team built by himself, that had risen from being rock bottom of the CBA league (6W 44L) last season to now 4th ranked in the league.
  • It was the Bayi Fubong Rockets and Wang Zhizhi that the Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks beat, and it was a hard earned victory after over time.
  • Wang Zhizhi used to be his role model and target, and when they were playing in CBA, Yao Ming never had the chance to conquer Wang Zhizhi on one-on-one basis. Yao Ming and the Shanghai Sharks were thrashed in the 2000/2001 season by Bayi Rockets in the CBA Final, and Wang Zhizhi left CBA for NBA afterwards after earning his 6th consecutive CBA championship for Bayi Rockets. Yao Ming then had his only CBA Championship next year dethroning the Bayi Rockets which was playing without Wang Zhizhi. So most Chinese basketball fans are still of the opinion that talent and skills wise, Wang Zhizhi was >>>>> than Yao Ming. So this win over Wang Zhizhi & Co. had some sort of psychological compensation to Big Yao.

Yao Ming was at the spectators' stand tonight (January 15) to cheer and rave support for his team Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks again in the Pudong Yuanshen Stadium.

His team did not disappoint him, and beat the visiting Fujian SBS Xunxin 116 vs 102. Every of the fans that came to watch the game left happily with their free pizza.

This will be Big Yao's last visit to the Pudong Yuanshen Stadium at least for the next few weeks, as he will travel to Beijing tomorrow (January 16) to attend the CCTV5/Anta 2009 Sports Personality Award Show tomorrow night, and he will travel back to Houston 2 days later for a detail medical check on the progress of his injured foot, and stay there to host a charity gala at The Museum of Fine Arts of Houston for Yao Ming Foundation on January 30th.

It is not yet known for sure whether he will return to Shanghai again afterwards for the Chinese New Year (February 14) , even though he told reporters earlier that he would love to spend the Chinese New Year in his home town this time round.

For details of the game versus Fujian SBS Xunxin, please refer to the following game recap.

As reported, Yao Ming flew to Beijing yesterday (Saturday, January 16) and showed up in the annual 2009 CCTV/Anta Sports Personality Award Show at the Centenial Lecture Hall of Peking University.

He was there as the award presenter together with Mr Zhou Qifeng, the new president of Peking University for the Best Female Athlete of the Year. The award went to Liu Zige, the Olympic/World Champion who broke world record in the 200 meter butterfly in the Rome World Championship in 2009. Unfortunately she was not there in person to receive the award, as she is currently in England for her training.

Yao Ming was also there as a nominee for the Special Contribution Award together with Liu Xiang (the Olympic/World Champion in 110 meter hurdel), Jenny Lang Ping (China women volleyball legend/icon), Wong Kampo (Hong Kong cycling world champion) and Li Yanxi (A 25 year old triple-jumper who broke a 28-year-old Asian record of Zou Zhensheng in the China National Game in 2009).

Li Yanxi won the award over the 3 big icons of Yao Ming, Liu Xiang and Jenny Lang Ping.

Actually, Yao Ming knew beforehand that he had little chance to win the award. He told CCTV reporters before entering the show that he did not know why he was nominated for the award in first place. He said he was injured and sidelined for most of 2009, and he did not think he had made any contribution to his sports and his team at all in 2009.

He sat through the show side by side with Liu Xiang, and he was seen in pretty good mood, walking quite normally without help of his crutches, and cracked jokes on the stage with Mr Zhou Qifeng, the new president of Peking University and the audience.
