On The Road To Recovery
Rockets.com's exclusive interview with Yao Ming
Jason Friedman
Rockets.com Staff Writer
Houston - Yao Ming has been a regular at Toyota Center over the last two months while he rehabs and recovers from the surgery he had this summer on his injured left foot. Last Friday, Rockets.com had a chance to watch Yao workout with his personal trainer Anthony Falsone and after they wrapped up, both men sat down for exclusive interviews which you can now watch by clicking on the videos above.
Among the topics discussed:
(Yao on the latest update on his recovery):
We’ve heard some good news from doctors: the bone is healing well and we add something new every couple weeks so we can improve things. Basically, so far, so good.
I always just keep telling myself to have the right attitude to face it because I think a good attitude will help me. Obviously, I have a lot of time right now to do something besides basketball – it’s too much time and makes me feel boring (laughs).
(Yao on what he does to fill all his free time now that he’s not playing basketball):
It’s a good time to study some. I’m reading some books about everything and also things I’m interested about. Back to school days, history is my favorite class, so I have times to read those books now. History books that tell you what’s happened in the last 100 years – the revolutions, the war, the economy – some things I relate to.
(Yao on his conversation with Cleveland Cavaliers’ center Zydrunas Ilgauskas prior to undergoing surgery this summer):
I really appreciate him. We had a talk before I had this surgery. Obviously people know his injury history and he told me about his experience about how he felt after the surgery and his rehab experience. I think that’s really helped me and made me relax because during those days before the surgery I was really, really nervous and really tired of hearing different ideas about how to treat this injury. Hearing his voice has really given me the confidence to come back to the court.
(Yao on his thoughts on the Rockets’ new up-tempo style of play):
I keep thinking about it. Those fastbreaks we have will really, really help us; not just because they get you a quick score but also because it relieves the pressure from the main guys on the team when T-Mac or me come back.
(Yao’s message to all the fans who are following his progress):
I would like to take this chance to thank those fans. Their support is my strength.
(Falsone on Yao’s progress):
Right now we’re in a place where we can’t do a lot but we’re doing what we can. Dr. Clanton is overseeing the whole process, Yao’s working with myself and Darryl Eto, the Performance Director for the Rockets. So I think he’s really in a good place and, like Yao said, every couple weeks we do something new and we’re happy with how it’s going. His attitude has improved dramatically as we’ve gotten further along in the process. Every day he’s getting a little bit better.
(Falsone on the way his mindset and outlook have changed since Yao’s injury was discovered):
There was a down (period) for both of us. I take it very personally with him: I feel his successes are mine and vice versa. That feeling was probably the lowest point. I would go to his house during that time and we couldn’t really do anything or work out, it was really just information gathering time. I’d go to his house, we’d be by the pool and just sit there, just to be together. You couldn’t really say anything to make it better because we just didn’t know.
But gradually over time, Yao is a naturally positive person… and it was kind of one of those things where we both pulled each other up in a way. I’ve seen him get better. I keep thinking as we get to January, we’re going to be more on a program that looks like a basketball player’s and that’s what I’m looking forward to. But until that time we have to do the right things, go slowly, proceed with caution; it’s not really in either one of our natures but that’s what we’re doing.
One good thing we’re going to get from this is a little bit of a break. We haven’t had that. If people knew what Yao went through, either in preparation for the Rockets or the national team, they’d be amazed. Now we’re going to get a bit of a break, he’s going to get a chance to go back to China in December and just kind of enjoy himself a little bit because when we come back around February it’s going to be gearing up and our preparation is going to start for the season in 2010. |

| Pryuen, does this mean that he'll be in HK to support his teammates in the East Asian Games? That would be nice. |

Well, the East Asian Games will be held in Hong Kong from December 5 ~ 13.
The new CBA season starts right after the East Asian Games on December 19.
According to what Wang Meng wrote on Titan Sports, Yao Ming will be back to oversee/supervise the very first CBA seaon opener of his Shanghai Sharks team.
Not too sure whether he will be back that soon to support his team mates of the national team at the East Asian Games in Hong Kong.
But one thing is sure.
This will be his first Christmas in China in the past 7 years. |

Yao will come back for the playoffs. Then the people will say Yao did play during the season, and should not deserve the championship. |

What a way for Barack Obama to strike a common chord in the Chinese students/youngsters' heart with such comments referencing Big Yao and his Shanghai Sharks in his opening remarks in the town hall meeting with 300 some university students in Shanghai during his China visit.

SHANGHAI, CHINA – U.S. President Barack Obama and NBA superstar Yao Ming really seem to like each other. At his town hall meeting in Shanghai today, the president spoke warmly of China’s most famous celebrity.
“Yao Ming is just one signal of our shared love of basketball -- I'm only sorry that I won't be able to see a Shanghai Sharks game while I'm visiting,” Obama said, referring to the basketball team that Yao purchased earlier this year.
On Sunday, Yao Ming posted a message to his Twitter and Facebook pages for the president.
“I hear Obama is in Shanghai, my hometown. Welcome to China. Hope you enjoy. Like NYC, the best food is sold on streets (I know u r busy tho)” the seven-foot, six-inch star of the Houston Rockets basketball team wrote.
The recent comments aren’t the first time for this unlikely duo. During a meeting with Chinese government officials in July, President Obama mentioned Yao for the first time.
“I have learned from the words of Yao Ming. No matter whether you are a new or an old team member, you need time to adjust to one another,” Obama quoted Yao Ming as saying. “Through the constructive meetings that we have already had, and through this dialog, I am confident that we will meet Yao’s standard,” Obama said.
Shortly after the president’s remarks, Yao posted the comments on his Facebook fan page and said he was surprised to be noticed by the Commander-in-Chief. |

So the "China Diary" could be an interesting book for Big Yao to read in his leisures..... cos the guy loves reading history.
It was about life/events that happened in China back in the 1974/75, that Yao Ming was not even born...... LOL !!!

HOUSTON, TEXAS - Seven-time NBA all-star player Yao Ming Friday said he received a gift recently from America’s 41st President George H.W. Bush.
“George Bush (the father) lives in Houston. He gave me his book ‘China Diary’ from his time there. It's good. My first English book to read,” the Houston Rockets center posted on his Twitter page.
George H.W. Bush has a long history with China. He served as Washington’s top diplomat in the country during the mid-1970s. He returned to Beijing last August to help dedicate the new U.S. Embassy in Beijing with his son and then President George W. Bush. He also served as the honorary captain of the U.S. team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The book, The China Diary of George H.W. Bush, was published by Princeton University Press last year. The memoir is a chronicle of his personal thoughts while head of the U.S. Liaison Office in Beijing. The diary begins on October 21, 1974 and ends on August 22, 1975. The diary contains Bush's reactions to all aspects of life in Beijing, including his opinions of public officials and diplomats, politics, family matters, international affairs, and life in China.
Meanwhile, America’s current President Barack Obama will arrive in Yao Ming’s hometown of Shanghai on the evening of Nov. 14 and has meetings scheduled in the city the following day. |

And yesterday (November 26, 2009), in Shanghai Sharks' team practice, Anthony Falsone, Yao Ming's personal trainer, showed up alongside the new Strength and Conditioning Coach, James Scott, who is an ex Rockets!!!
When asked whether he will be the assistant coach for the Shanghai Sharks in the new season, Anthony Falsone said he won't be the new assistant coach. He was just here in Shanghai to assist James Scott to settle down and adapt to the new environment.
He said his stay in Shanghai will be a very short stay.
When the reporters asked him about Yao Ming, Anthony Falsone said even without him around, Yao Ming will still be persisiting with his rehab. He works on his regular rehab (strength and conditioning and shooting exercise) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and on Tuesday and Thursday, he works in the pool. He will probably be ridding of his protective boot on his left foot in 2 weeks time.
When asked what is in his plan for Big Yao when he gets rid of his bulky protective boot on his left foot, he said nothing has yet been planned. He said Yao Ming is getting fatter, but that's normal, and it will take time for him to trim it down to competitive shape and form in due course. He said he is not worried about Big Yao in adapting to the current playing style of the Houston Rockets as he thought Big Yao will do anything possible in his powers to readjust to the team.
When asked whether Yao Ming will be back to China in December, Anthony Falsone said, it will all depend on whether he will get the greenlights from the doctors for long haul travelling.
But towards the end of the interview, he had a slip of tongue.
When asked when he will leave Shanghai, he said he will return in another 2 weeks, after he sees Yao Ming in Shanghai. |
