Just wondering... does Yao still have to give half of his earnings (endorsements included) to the CBA?

I don't think so, NOT ANYMORE after his rookie season, I believe.

But it was reported that there was a lump sum of money 培养费 he needed to give back to his mother team, Shanghai Sharks, for nurturing him up as a basketball player, which Team Yao never paid.

Maybe the recent rumor of Big Yao buying out Shanghai Sharks will settle this once and for all.

BTW, the money he earned from commercial endorsement was never included in what he had to give back to CBA or Shanghai Sharks.

Yao needs another max contract to make more money. He needs to invest that money in new businesses so that he can be on par with other athletes like Kobe or Lebron.

NBA star Yao Ming to buy his old Chinese team: report

Wed, Jul 15, 2009
AFP

BEIJING - Chinese NBA star Yao Ming is to buy his former basketball team in Shanghai for an undisclosed sum, state media reported Wednesday.

A group representing the 2.26-metre (seven-foot-six-inch) centre for the NBA Houston Rockets signed an agreement to transfer the Shanghai Sharks' shares to Yao, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The shares will be transferred in the next two months, but the deal still has to be submitted to the Chinese Basketball Association for final approval, the report said.

Yao used to play with the Shanghai Sharks and brought them to victory in the 2001-2002 China league season, according to the report.

He topped the annual Forbes magazine list of China's most successful celebrities this year based on his Olympic performance and lucrative endorsement deals with Visa and McDonald's.

Now Yao can give himself a max contract if he can't get one in the NBA. I bet some old Rockets players will get to continue making some money if they can't find a spot in the NBA.

He needs to over haul that organization. From the coaches to the scouts to the president to the uniform. The team plays in one of the best tv market, biggest city in the world, and can't draw fans nor develop any players.

good for yao. now that his playing career is over, he can start his next phase in life in running a team. Let's hope he finds more success as an owner after having a disappointing nba career. Best of luck in Shanghai.

Well, probably not for the coach.... cos Li Qiuping was his mentor/coach and good friend since he was a lad.

Yeah....he needs to do alot of things about this team.

Maybe signing Steve Francis to play there in Shanghai will be a great move to at least boost the gate receipts of the team. :P :P :P

Li QiuPing is one of the biggest problem I have with that team. I know he is a favorite there, but he is one of those old mentality Chinese coaches, these guys should be phased out of the CBA. Stubborn and authoritarian, he doesn't even speak Mandarin to his players, in the huddles he babbles Shanghainese to his players, most of them are not even from Shanghai. Who the hell can understand him?

FYI to Yao, Guo ShiQiang is available. He is doing a great job with the CNT, as a good of a job as Jonas. Young, energetic. fresh, innovative, likes to play his young players, and most importantly likes to coach.
