According to the following exclusive interview of Keith Garnett by Sina Sports, Yao Ming is doing well on his rehabilitation, and is to return to court at the FIBA Diamond Cup tournament at the end of this month.
Quote: http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2008-07-07/23023770616.shtml
Keith Garnett is the assistant trainer/physician for the Houston Rockets; currently he is sent to Beijing by the Houston Rockets, to supervise/monitor and assist Yao Ming in his rehabilitation training, and therefore could be viewed as one of the “nannies” of Big Yao (Note: Jack Sikma, assistant coach of Houston Rockets and Anthony Falsone,Yao Ming’s personal trainer are also in Beijing now). Therefore, he could be viewed as the most authoritative spokesperson who can brief us about the latest rehabilitation status of Big Yao.
So during a seminar/clinic on July 7 Beijing Standard Time, Keith Garnett found time to receive the following interview by the reporter, and disclosed Yao Ming’s latest situation.
Reporter: So the purpose for your hosting today’s clinic/seminar is to introduce some of the most advanced technologies, techniques, and theories in sports medicine to the Chinese sports medics?
Garnett: I am very happy to be able to be here in China with Yao Ming and have this opportunity to do some academic exchange with the Chinese Sports Medical field to promote some of our experiences and methodology that we used in Houston Rockets and NBA about injury prevention and rehabilitation.
Reporter: (We learnt that) Yao Ming had a medical check-up/re-examination in the hospital this morning. Can you brief us on the contents and results of this medical check-up?
Garnett: Nothing too special about the inspection. It is only some routine conventional check-up. We want to take a latest look at Yao Ming’s condition. Just some conventional tests, that’s all. Now that the intensity and load of Yao Ming’s rehabilitation training have increased, it is possible some running or jumping exercises could have adverse influence to Yao Ming’s wound. As for the details and concrete results from the medical check up, I have yet the opportunity to review/discuss with the doctors from the hospital. I hope everything is gonna be normal and alright (for Yao Ming).
Reporter: At his current condition, how often and how soon will Yao Ming require another such medical check-up?
Garnett: Possibly he will require another check-up right before the Olympics. We need to make sure that everything is okay and no problem with Yao Ming’s wound.
Reporter: So will Yao Ming’s performance (during the Olympics) be severely hampered and influenced by his injury?
Garnett: I certainly hope that there will not be any influence (to his performance). In fact the major reason why the Houston Rockets sent me here is to make sure and guarantee that during this period leading up to the Olympics, Yao Ming will have a normal rehabilitation and receives the right treatment.
Reporter: When can Yao Ming return to compete on court?
Garnett: Yao Ming may return to court and compete in the end of this month in the FIBA Diamond Cup.
Reporter: Yao Ming’s schedule (to return to court) had been repeatedly changed and delayed. Is it because the Houston Rockets do not feel comfortable about his rehabilitation?
Garnett: As far as Yao Ming’s rehabilitation is concerned, the Houston Rockets is equally concerned and anticipative as CBA and the China national team. We also hope that Yao Ming could play as his normal self during the Olympics. And the purpose for us (i.e. Jack Sikma, Anthony Falsone and Keith Garnett) coming here to China is to make sure that Yao Ming can return to court at the most appropriate time, and put up a normal display/performance at the Olympics. Yao Ming had with him a very good set of rehabilitation training plan/time table. We are just here to make sure that he persists and defers to the plan on his rehabilitation. By doing so, we can guarantee that Yao Ming can return to his pre-injury top competitive form and condition before the Olympics, as well as before the NBA new season.
Reporter: The other Houston Rockets star player Tracy McGrady also underwent a surgery after the end of last season. So how is he doing now (in his rehabilitation)?
Garnett: Tracy is doing well in his recuperation/rehabilitation. He is about to be fully healed, and he is already eagerly looking forward to the start of the new season with anticipation.
Reporter: Are you confident that Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady can stay healthy and play the full season next year?
Garnett: Certainly, I have that confidence that both Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady will stay healthy. That is my job. |

Here is a video of Keith Garnett, Anthony Falsone and Yao Ming at yesterday's (July 7) seminar/clinic in Beijing for some Chinese sports medic of the various CBA teams.
In it, both Keith Garnett and Anthony Falsone expressed optimism about Yao Ming resuming his health and returning to court in top competitive form and condition for the Olympics.

A short news clip of CCTV on Yao Ming practicing with the national team in their closed door training in Beijing.
http://tv.sohu.com/20080712/n258106964.shtml
Big Yao had yet to resume playing 5 versus 5 physcial contact basketball. He just joined in the walk-throughs and practiced his shooting.
During the interview as revealed in the news clips, he said there is already no problem in his foot, but for precaution purpose and as recommended by the Rockets doctors, he could not resume practicing 5 vs 5 physical contact backetball and return to court until end of July. He also commented about the difficulty of facing USA in their opener in the Olympic. He said both team are not on the same starting line as the USA team is far superior than China. But he said he and his team mates will not give up and will give their all to compete with the Amercians.

An article from Wang Meng of Titan Sports on latest status of Yao Ming's rehabilitation.
Quote: http://rockets.basketball.titan24.com/08-07-14/87516.html
Wang Meng of Titan Sports reports from Beijing
The physical conditions of Yao Ming continue to improve; regardless of who you ask, Yao Ming or his personal trainer, Anthony Falsone, they will tell you the same thing: “We can feel that. It is improving; it has been improving all these while.”
Even though he had rejoined the national team for team practices, Head Coach Jonas Kazlauskas had given Yao Ming a lot of free hand and time for his rehabilitation; after all, his health condition is very special, as he had just recovered from a major surgery, and would require some specialized training. Anthony Falsone said: “We must thank Coach Kazlauskas giving us a lot of freedom and time. The national team usually carries out 2 training daily; the morning session is devoted to shooting practice and strength and conditioning, while the afternoon session is for strategy walk-through and team scrimmages. Coach Kazlauskas told us that we could control our own time and pace for the morning session, such that I can lead and assist Yao Ming in his rehabilitation according to our predetermined plans.”
Compared to what Yao Ming had gone through in Houston, there is no significant adjustment in the training contents at this stage, and is still focused on strength and conditioning exercises for his body. On this, Falsone further elaborated: “We’re still adhering to our original rehabilitation plan, and that is to help him to restore strength to his injured part (i.e. his left leg/ankle) and his shoulder. You should all know that Yao Ming’s right shoulder is still with problems. We hope the rehabilitation training/exercises could reduce his pain, and accelerate the recovery, such that we could eventually avoid another surgery (on his shoulder). And of course, we added into the rehabilitation plan a lot of exercises focused on enhancing the nimbleness in his ankles and his on-court endurance.”
It was due to the fact that the surgeries (of the past 3 years) were on different parts of Yao Ming’s body (the toe, the knee, the ankle), it is difficult to give a comparison or description of the state of his recovery. But the good news is that Yao Ming had resumed playing the full-loaded physical contact basketball. As the team scrimmage began, Yao Ming’s condition was very poor. Coach Kazlauskas had to team him up with the bench players; he had to lead players like Wang Lei and Ding Jinhui, playing against Ah Lian and Da Zhi (i.e. Yi Jianlian and Wang Zhizhi). And when he played defense against Ah Lian, all Ah Lian needed to do was to swing his body and sprinted past him, and Yao Ming would be left stranded and unable to catch him. Yao Ming said: “At that time, my speed, particularly the speed of my lateral move, was just terrible.” Also his physical strength and stamina seemed like non-existent. Right after only one short session, he was already seen gasping for air, trying to catch his breath. His lungs felt like they were burning.
Anthony Falsone said: “You can only adjust and retrieve your competitive form and condition through competition. At the beginning, he would feel very tired, and very sore in his muscles. But after the thrills of competition, his physical condition will rebound (from the low trough) and then rise. This needs a process, and is a progressive development bringing him back from the low trough to the high peak of his physical strength and condition. So far, we felt satisfied about our progress in his rehabilitation.”
And for this reason, we probably could see Yao Ming returning to court at the forthcoming FIBA Stankovic Continental Cup tournament. |

Another article from Wang Meng of Titan Sports.
It seems it is highly likely that Yao Ming will be returning to court to play in the forthcoming FIBA Stankovic Continental Cup tournament (July 17 ~ 20 in Hangzhou). He will probably be playing from the bench with limited minutes trying to adapt to the pace and intensity of the competition.

Wang Meng of Titan Sports reports from Beijing
On July 16, the Chinese national team will fly to Hangzhou to participate in the FIBA Stankovic Continental Cup tournament, and start the prelude to the most important pre-Olympic “mock examination”. And on that south-bound plane from Beijing to Zhejiang, we would be able to see the shadow of that 2.26 meter giant. Yes, Yao Ming will be almost 100% certain to be returning to court in this FIBA Stankovic Continental Cup tournament. But as he has yet to be 100% in his form and condition, he will probably have to play from the bench.
Last week, the Chinese national team continued its rhythm of 2 daily training sessions: shooting practice and strength and conditioning in the morning, strategy walk-through and team scrimmages in the afternoon. Coach Kazlauskas had decided to give Yao Ming the maximum free hand and time (for his rehabilitation). Anthony Falsone, Yao Ming’s personal trainer, told the reporter: “Coach Kazlauskas said we can be discretionary with the usage of the morning session, that I can lead Yao Ming in his rehabilitation at our own pace.” However, in the afternoon, Falsone had to hand Yao Ming back to Coach Kazlauskas for the “actual” physical contact team scrimmages (and strategy wlak-through). Yao Ming actually had begun for a week already in such team scrimmages. However, in those team scrimmages of the Chinese national team, the NBA All Star starting centre were teamed up with the bench players of the national team. The starting interior players were still the Wang Zhizhi and Yi Jianlian duo.
Ever since the end of February of his injury, Yao Ming had persisted in his strength and conditioning exercises, but playing competitive and physical contact basketball is another matter. His body had begun to show some adverse reactions, such as he would get easily tired, aching and sore muscles, foot blisters etc. Yao Ming sighed: “I can feel my form and conditions were improved significantly fast in the first week of July, but for some reasons, it slowed down this week.” During those rest breaks of the team scrimmages, Anthony Falsone always ran up to Yao Ming and asked after his condition. “I asked how he felt, and he always shouted back from afar: I am doing fine. You don’t have to worry about me.” At the same time, Yao Ming did not forget to show his wit and humor to release his agony and worry that the recovery of his form and condition is too slow: “Coach Kazlauskas is already lenient and kind to me that he did not team me up with the tier-3 players.”
Anthony Falsone is the one person who understands Yao Ming’s body condition best. He thought all these are normal phrases during his rehabilitation. “From last Wednesday (July 9), Yao Ming had begun the fully-loaded team scrimmages. I firmly believe that in a very short period of time, he will be able to return to his normal state. At present, he should be able to play in limited minutes.” Anthony Falsone’s view (of Yao Ming’s current state) was sort of endorsed and confirmed by the coaching staff of the national team: " Yao Ming will certainly play in the FIBA Stankovic Continental Cup tournament, but we will have to control his playing time. We will play him from the bench (for limited minutes) and let him gradually adapt to the pace and intensity of competition. "
So China will face stiff competition from Iran, Angola and Russia in Hangzhou from July 17 to 20, and probably fans could finally catch a long-awaited glimpse of Yao Ming (on the court) from the bench. |

So at least, Wang Meng was correct this time about Big Yao travelling with the team to Hangzhou.
The national team left Beijing this morning for Hangzhou, and Yao Ming was seen here sitting in the waiting hall with Wang Zhizhi.
It remains to be seen how many games and how many minutes in the games Yao Ming will be playing in the FIBA Stankovic Continental Cup tournament.
Hope to have more photos later. |

The rest of the national team arriving at the hotel.
Wang Shipeng, Ding Junhui, Li Nan, Chen Jianghua also travelled with the team, but their photos were not captured by the Sohu reporter.
On the other hand, Zhou Peng had been cut from the roster and went back to Guangzhou.
So 14 players remain on the roster with 2 players to be further cut.
Wang Zhizhi
Yi Jianlian
Zhu Fangyu
Du Feng
Liu Wei
Sun Yue
Zhang Kai
Zhang Qingpeng
