CBA announced yesterday that Yao Ming will return to China end June to rejoin the national team.

He will hold a press conference on June 26 (Thursday) in Beijing about his plan for raising funds for the victims/children of the Sichuan earthquake, and his rehabilitation status.

He will definitely join the national team and play in the following exhibition games/tournaments:

1. FIBA Stankovic Continental Cup (in Hangzhou) July 17 ~ July 20

4 countries will participate in this tournament: China, Iran, Angola and Russia.

China will play Angola on July 17, then Iran on July 18 and finally Russia on July 20.

2. FIBA Diamond Tournament (in Nanjing) July 29 ~ August 1

There will be 6 countries participating in the tournament: Argentina, Iran, Serbia, Angola, Australia and China.

China is grouped with Angola and Australia, and they will play against Angola on July 29 and then Australia on July 30.

The last day of the tournament will be on August 1, whereupon the 6 teams will play against their respective position placers on the other group to decide the various positions of the tournament.

i.e. If China is placed 1st in their group, they will play against the team that is placed #1 in the other group to decide the champion of the Diamond Cup Tournament . If they are 2nd, they will play against the 2nd placed team on the other group to decide 3rd and 4th of the tournament. If they come 3rd in their group, they will play the 3rd placed team on the other group to decide the 5th and 6th position.

3. They will play Argentina on August 5, 3 days ahead of the opening of the Olympics Game.

So if China and Argentina can end up #1 in their respective groups in the FIBA Diamond Tournament, then we will be able to see Luis Scola playing against Yao Ming twice before the Olympics.

Its will be great if Argentina can send their 1st team, because I heard Russia and some other countries are sending their U-20 teams. Its kinda pointless to have Yao and folks play against a bunch of kids.

Well, the FIBA Stankovic Continental Cup is scheduled mid July, which is still 3 weeks away from the Olympics. Therefore, considering hotel accommodations and living logistics, understandably, Russia and the other participating teams could be sending their under-strength teams or U-20 teams.

But for the FIBA Diamond Tournament, it is scheduled July 29 ~ August 1, which is only 1 week prior to the opening of the Olympics.

This is particularly so for the August 5 game.

I think all those countries would like to use this tournament to test the strengths of their other opponents and will send their 1st team.

So IMHO, Argentina will send their 1st team to China on the above tournament/exhibition game.

If Argentina sends their real NT, it should be a great gauge for CNT's chances in the Olympics. I consider Argentina to be one of the top 3 teams in the world right now. Hopefully, we'll play them competitively.

BEIJING -- Yao Ming, China's most popular sportsman, will make his return from foot surgery to play for his country against Iran in next month's Stankovic Cup, local media have reported.

The 7-foot-6 Houston Rockets center had his NBA season cut short by a fractured foot in February and faced a race to be fit to lead China's challenge for basketball gold at the Aug. 8-24 Beijing Olympics.

"Yao Ming will definitely play the match and this will be his first match after returning from injury," the organizer of the Stankovic Cup told Sohu.com.

As well as China and Asian champions Iran, the Stankovic Cup will also feature European champions Russia and African champions Angola. It will take place in Hangzhou, China, from July 17-20.

Yao's agent said the 27-year-old had been given the all-clear by Rockets medical staff to return to China on June 24 but could not confirm whether he would be fit for the Stankovic Cup.
