Towards the end of Obama's term, US allies in Asia openly supported the TPP (a US proposal). They knew it would piss off China (which is a big risk for the smaller countries), but stuck their neck out anyway to balance power in the region. Then Trump admin torpedoed the deal, leaving everyone else in an awkward position and negotiating from a position of weakness with China. a graphic showing the various Asian-Pacific nations and others in trade alliances. Interesting groupings. The CTPPP is what used to be the TPP that the US backed out of :

It is interesting to note that Taiwan, India and the US are excluded from this agreement.

Canto just show their level of ignorance.
Singapore has always been a trading nation, its very founding by the British was to serve as a port primary for the spice trade and also the opium and tea trade from China.
Of course Singapore will drive the RCEP and the CPTPP. Singapore goal was always to include India inside the RCEP and US inside the CPTPP.
India big concern and not joining RCEP is they don't want to give up their domestic agriculture industry to Australia. Cheap electronics from China is definitely a concern in the short term but India is slowing getting around that.
I was invited to a few round table meeting with India couple of weeks back. India is getting around to making cheap electronics. Like China, they want semiconductors technology. Cheap imports for China is never a big concern, India is getting around to making those themselves.
The trade rules for RCEP especially for intellectual property is very lax, why would China signed them if it not so? Again the real prize for China is if they can join the CPTPP meant to bring USA.
CPTPP will not be easy, China has to give up more concession. More power to Singapore if China decides to join.
Singapore was never a US allied. Singapore was offered but turned the USA down in 2003. Philippine and Thailand took up US offer and are US major non-NATO allies. But Singapore allows US carrier and ships to use its ports
Again, there are Singapore troops inside Taiwan. A middle finger to PRC.
This is the level of diplomacy Singapore achieve to allow the first meeting for both ROC and PRC to take place. The first meeting of a United State president and North Korea Supreme Leader to meet again inside Singapore.
But meh, canto victory.

LoL the cantos
The point is to deflate canto inflated egos on China strongk.
China was really never a trade concern except to Indian cantos. India wanted a 3 trier phasing out of tariffs with China inside the final phase. The trade deficit with China is big now but India is already catching up to making cheap.
India can catch up to making cheap electronics, they want semiconductors which they know China don't have. In my meeting with Indian counterpart, India straight up asked for wafer fab investments.
It is their milk industry that India wants to protect and from Australia. In India, milk and dairy is important with huge culture, religious and economic reference.
RCEP aside, the real prize for Singapore is US inside the CPTPP, since we didn't have that, China is a pretty good consolation prize. China is interested but the CPTPP will not be as easy as the RCEP with China giving up more concession.

singcuck land is like the local hotel or bar that international leaders sometimes use to conduct business... it's not like some super prestigious place outside of mega cities like NY, London, HK, Shanghai, etc.
china is the big d1ck now in asia... they have the production, they have the economy. why did you think all these little ducks fall in line recently, tripping over themselves to sign the RCEP?
in loo india not going to move the needle, even if they can produce cheap electronics to export...hint, they can't compete with china without massive tariffs.
no one even talks about india banning chinese apps anymore, because they can't stop using china apps even for a month... rofl. also, in loo india is going to recession from cov19.
all that back peddling and sword swallowing... but feel free to add to the us economy by buying more arms and weapons. modi is a joke of a leader... gandhi would have slapped the sht out of this man.

LoL angry canto just type a bunch of nothing. What is canto point?
China ban apps, India ban apps, what is the point?
Canto cannot even differentiate his head from his butt hole
You do know I am working in China, and at one point directly for the Chinese CPC government. I was even a "model soldier" which quite frankly weird me out.
I was just doing my old Singapore connection favors talking to these India on manufacturing. Again India has a huge trade deficit with China importing lots of cheap components from China to make cheap electronics. India know right now they can solve this doing what China used to do, direct foreign investment making used of its cheap labor. India copy and paste from China playbook, accept China learned it from Singapore.
India got it cheap imports from China covered. They are getting FDI even from China to make in India. Foxconn, BYD, Xiaomi, oppo and Huawei. You named it, they are all there to be made in India.
Remind me of the time back in the early 2000s when Nokia, Motorola, Samsung were made in China and even the Chinese won't buy their own Panda or Haier phones.
The troll inside me even trolled the Indian on the point Xiaomi is the number 1 phone in India. I find it strange that Indian cantos insisted Xiaomi phones are Indian like an Indian brand.
Anyway India doesn't want China manufacturing. They want Semiconductors, which is what China don't have and is after as well.
Again, the issue for RCEP is milk which the Indian know they will be destroyed by Australian imports.
The point is, Xi's want to be in the CPTPP. Which is good for trade as China will have to give up more concession compared to the RCEP, and in turn good for trading nation like Singapore. China is already Singapore largest trading partner taking the most of Singapore export.

so pretends the Singasnob, the one who was good enough to get in Ruffles.
this comment was offered by one of my trading colleagues, who is Singaporean and a proud graduate of Ruffles
It didn't have to be this way, but China's influence in the region will accelerate now. Towards the end of Obama's term, Singapore and other US allies in the region openly supported the TPP (a US proposal). They knew it would piss off China (which is a big risk for the smaller countries), but stuck their neck out anyway to balance power in the region, with China getting more aggressive over the South China Sea. Then Trump admin torpedoed the deal, leaving everyone else in an awkward position and negotiating from a position of weakness with China.
