Hmmm.... I don't see any construction pics of the soon to become the world's tallest building, being built in Shanghai.... the "Shanghai World Financial Center". Supposed to be over 95 storeys high and 1660 ft tall when complete.

Its a wonder why people around the world don't associate China with BIG, despite everything getting bigger over there; not just the population.
~SWFC - tallest building
~3 Gorges Dam - biggest dam
~Yao Ming (b-ball players) - big star player
~Great Wall - longer than most countries
~people - 21%+ of humanity
~Jackie Chan - biggest action star
~Hong Kollywood - big movie industry
~PLA - big military, closest thing Asia has to a super-power
~250,000 ton (displacement) aircraft carrier - biggest military vessel soon to be constructed (more than 2x bigger than US carriers that has 97,000 ton displacement weight)

Yao is looking good. But he needs to change his hairstyle. That bridge and those buildings look really nice. I wonder if they were built by Chinese engineers and architects.

What? You think the Chinese are not smart enough to do engineering mathematics
?  :?: :?: :?:

Well as a matter of fact, if you check the following website:

http://www.skyscrapers.com/re/en/wm/ci/100213/bu/

you will find that most of the TOP 10 landmark buildings in Shanghai are designed and built by all kinds of foreign companies from Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, UK, Canada etc. For example, Jin Mao Tower is designed by a UK architect company Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; Plaza 66 is a joint project between Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and local Chinese architect companies; Bocom Financial Tower is designed by ABB Architekten, a German architect company; World Finace Tower is by Leigh & Orange Ltd. (basically a Hong Kong company); Bank of China Tower is by Nikken Sekkei Ltd., a Japanese company. etc. etc. etc.

Of ocurse most of the developers of these landmark buildings are still Chinese real estate developers (with Hong Kong real estates conglomerates as well, such as Hang Lung, New World Development, Cheung Kong etc.) with Chinese engineers/constructors, and the civil/electrical engineering part would be mostly by Chinese engineers.

Nevertheless, the Lupu Bridge was desgined by a Chinese architect called Lin Yuanpei.

Well, China is catching up very very fast, but in some areas, they still require the expertise and technology from outside. That is where we can contribute to, I think. :P :D

WELL, it has yet to be seen whether the Shanghai World Financial Centre will be the TALLEST.

It was recently reported that the TALLEST building will be built in New York at the site where the former World Trade Centre was.

http://www.dispatch.co.za/2003/02/15/editoria/LP1.HTM

The Shanghai World Financial Centre, designed and undertaken by the Japanese Mori Building Company, was originally designed at 94 storeys at 460 meter. The project was called halt by the 1997 Asian financial turmoil, but was recently resumed after resolving some funding issues, and the latest blueprint was to become 101 storeys and 492 meters.

BUT WHO KNOWS ??? The Americans may still want to snatch #1 away from China by building the TALLEST skyscraper in New York !!!

Anyway, this is what Shanghai World Financial Centre will look like.

I saw a show called Extreme Engineering about the world's largest condo. It's supposed to be a whole city unto itself. Awsome. I can't remember where in Asia it was supposed to be built, but Hong Kong comes to mind.

Then the KL tower is also quite a spectacle... it is the 4th tallest building in the world.
