If Yao Ming really wants to help the Chinese Men National Team, he needs to have a son with his 6'7" wife. That kid will become the first 8'0" NBA player.

Looks like it's ALMOST 100% CERTAIN Yao Ming will become CBA Chairman in another 2 months' time.

In a press conference hosted by The State General Administration of Sports yesterday in Beijing, Yao was named the co-head of a preparatory group for the general election of the CBA, which is scheduled for March.

And the 7 selection criteria for the apporpriate chairman candidate seemed TAILORED MADE for Yao Ming:
• Should have a basketball professional background

  • Well-versed and knowledgeable about international and domestic basketball development trends

  • Had contributed significantly to Chinese basketball (in the past)

  • Has high social reputation

  • Had been actively pushing/promoting basketball development (in China)

Retired basketball star Yao Ming's pivotal role in the game's professional reform in China grew on Monday with his involvement in the upcoming election of the new Chinese Basketball Association leadership.

Yao, a former NBA All-Star, was named on Monday the co-head of a preparatory group for the general election of the CBA, which is scheduled for March, the CBA said in a statement.

According to a report in Basketball Pioneers newspaper on Jan 2, the General Administration of Sport of China, the nation's sports regulator, made 10 proposals during an internal meeting on basketball's future development, two of which involved Yao. The first called for discussion of Yao becoming the new chairman, and the second reportedly was to invite Yao to be head coach of the national men's team.

Li Yingchuan, assistant director of the administration, said in a briefing on Monday that the new election of CBA leadership will be a major step forward for the management of professional sports.

"We have to reshuffle the leadership structure and separate pro sports management from the traditional government-run system. The reform is to make the CBA a full-fledged nongovernmental organization," he said.

Current CBA leaders, including chairman Yu Zaiqing, were appointed by the administration from its own officials, while the new election is expected to exclude them from the CBA's top leadership.

Li Jinsheng, the current vice-chairman of the CBA and another co-host of the group, said the new association leader will make great contributions to the game and so should have a professional background with knowledge of the game and a high social reputation.

Yao, China's only Basketball Hall of Famer, led the national team to eighth place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has pushed for the game's professional reform in China.

"I appreciate everybody's trust to involve me in the preparatory work for the election of the new CBA to contribute to the game's development in a new role," Yao, the owner of CBA club Shanghai Sharks, said on Monday.

"This job is way different from all the previous ones of mine. I have to listen more, observe more and learn more from others and work together with people in the basketball circle to be competent at it," said Yao, 36, who retired in 2011.

Observers said there would be an apparent conflict of interest if Yao put on multiple hats as the association leader and a team owner as well as his recent appointment as vice-chairman of the CBA League (Beijing) Sports Co, the league's commercial promotional agency, which was established in November.

"I support Yao taking over the CBA, but for the job as the national head coach and other roles there should be a more scientific and fair system to recruit the best possible talent," said Su Qun, a well-known basketball commentator.

Chinese basketball icon Yao Ming has been elected chairman of the Chinese Basketball Association, the association announced after its national congress on Thursday.

Since January, multiple media outlets have hinted at Yao's involvement in the election, citing a proposal from the General Administration of Sport, the country's top sports governing body, that he be involved in the game's professional reform.

Yao, a former NBA All Star and backbone of the Chinese national team, said after his appointment that he will work hard to lead the reshuffled CBA and push for reform of the game.

“After being regrouped as a full-fledged nongovernmental organization, we have to better study our own situation while learning from overseas expertise to work out our own way to develop the game in China,” he said.

The CBA said in a briefing last month that its new leader would be someone with a professional background, who had made a great contribution to and had knowledge of the game and was held in high regard.

Yao, China's only Basketball Hall of Famer, led the national team to eighth place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has been operating his hometown CBA club Shanghai Sharks as its owner.

Li Yingchuan, assistant director of the administration, said that Yao's election as the new CBA leader will be a major step forward for the management of the game in China.

Observers said earlier that reshuffling the administration's leadership structure and separating professional sports league management from the traditional government-run system will help improve decision-making, as well as enhancing independence and transparency.

Former CBA leaders, including ex-chairman Yu Zaiqing, were appointed by the administration from within its own ranks.

What does it mean to be a chairman of the CBA? Does this mean Yao is the most powerful man in the CBA? Is it like an NBA commissioner? Does the CBA have a commissioner?

Well, CBA chairman used to be a NOMINAL FIGUREHEAD 虚衔 with not much power and authority. The actual day-to-day work/administration/management regarding CBA league and Chinese national team came under the jurisdiction of the Basketball Management Centre under CBA. Xin Lancheng was the Director of the Basketball Management Centre and also one of the 22 vice chairman of CBA. His role was just like NBA Commissioner.

The outgoing CBA Chairman was this guy Yu Zaiqing, a vice director of the State General Administration of Sports, who had been CBA Chairman for the past 10 years, but basically contributed ZERO to the sports of basketball. He held alot of titles including Vice Chairman of International Olympic Committee, and the Chinese Olympic Committee. He was the bureaucrat notoriously famous for scolding speed skating world champion Zhou Yang for not thanking the party and country first before thanking her parents when she won the gold medal for 1500 meters in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

But I believe there had been this talk about basketball reforms for years, and there had been revisions to the article of association/charter of CBA, granting the Chairman with more power and authority.

And there had been a new company formed under CBA last October, called CBA League (Beijing) Sports Co., of which Yao Ming was elected as a vice chairman, which will eventually replace the Basketball Management Centre, to take full charge of the CBA league.

So yes, you could say that Yao is now entrusted with MORE POWER, AUTHORITY BUT RESPONSIBILITY to spearhead the future growth and development of the basketball sports in China.
