So Yao Ming will become the first Chinese basketballer and the sixth Rockets to have his jersey retired in NBA. :P  :D 8)

  • #45 Rudy Tomjanovich
  • #23 Calvin Murphy
  • #24 Moses Malone
  • #22 Clyde Drexler
  • #34 Hakeem Olajuwon
The question now is WHEN???

The 2013 NBA All Stars will be held in Toyota Centre Houston.

And it was reported earlier Yao Ming had received an invitation to attend the 2013 NBA All Stars as a guest of honor of Houston Rockets.

Then, IMHO, the MOST APPROPRIATE OCCASION to retire Yao's #11 jersey will then be at the 2013 NBA All Stars in front of national/international TV live broadcast !!!

Yao's legacy with the Rox will be much greater than Tmac or Stevie Franchise. I doubt they'll retire Francis' jersey.

To be honest, Yao only leads the team to the western semi finals. And it doesn't deserve a jersey retirement as a player.

In another way, Rox could give him a contribution award instead.

They often retire jerseys to franchise players. I dont know what the criteria is, but Yao pretty much epitomizes the 21st century Rockets. We dont often see professional teams punish their franchise players because they didnt bring a championship in when it comes to retiring jerseys.

However the opposite isn't true, teams will honour players who weren't really franchise players for bringing a championship in, so the concept's not mutually exclusive. (i.e. Drexler was only in Houston for 3-ish years - tail end years of his career, but he helped them win the championship the year of the trade)

But Houston's basketball is actually not as good as before. Yao is like the tallest among midgets. So does he really deserve it?

I dont quite understand your point here.
Anyway, common precedence is that franchise players who have been around as long as Yao will often get their jerseys retired.

Yao is not like Olajuwon. He didn't bring Houston champ. But is he still recognized as franchise player?

Well, you don't need to get DirectSh!!!!!!t's point.

It's SO OBVIOUS that he is NOT EVEN a Yao Ming fan.

He just TROLLS here
.

Even though Yao Ming only came past Round 1 once with the Rockets, he had been the face of the franchise for close to a decade, and he had made the NBA All Stars 7 times. He was and is beloved and popular on and off the court by the Houston communities.

WHO other than a Yao-Hater would grudge to have his jersey retired in Toyota Centre????
