Accompanied by Special Olympics Chairman Timothy Shriver and Greek Special Olympics Organizing Committee President Joanna Despotopoulou, the 13th Special Olympics was officially declared open by Greek President Karolos Papoulias at a ceremony held yesterday (June 25) at the Panathinaiko Stadium, also known as the Kallimarmaro (i.e. the "beautifully marbled") (this stadium is built completely by white marble and where the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 was held). The 13th Special Olympics will bring together over the next ten days (June 26 ~ July 4) 7,500 athletes from 183 countries and regions.
Yao Ming was seen yesterday at the opening ceremony accompanying the 137-member Chinese delegation into the stadium.

Here is a recap of some of the activities of Yao Ming in the 13th Special Olympics in Athens yesterday (June 26th).
He was seen here at the Healthy Athletes venue welcoming the first batches of doctors, volunteers and Special Olympic athletes. Since officially launching in 1997 as a Special Olympics program, the Healthy Athletes initiative has grown to provide 7 types of free health screenings and services with the goal to improve athletes' ability to train and compete in Special Olympics. The initiative has been implemented globally in more than 90 countries and is designed to help Special Olympics athletes improve their health and fitness, leading to enhanced sports experience and improved well-being.

I just saw the following photos of Yao Ming meeting with Michelle Kwan on a June 29th dinner banquet in Special Olympics in Athens, then the following photos of him and Zhang Ziyi and Stevie Wonder in a June 30 press conference in Athens,

But the next thing I found was some photos on Yu Jia's weibo, microblog on sina.com (Yu Jia is a famous CCTV5 sports/basketball commentator and in very good personal terms with Yao Ming) that in fact Big Yao has been back into Beijing, and was shown here at lunch with his Rockets team mate, Chuck Hayes who had arrived Beijing this morning (July 2) for his 2011 China Tour for his new endorser, Qiao Dan.
And Yu Jia posted in his micro blog that Chuck Hayes said he like that taste of Maotai, one of the strongest liquors in China !!!

After the rumor of him retiring on July 9th, Yao Ming made his first public appearance this afternoon (July 13) in People's Great Hall in Beijing to show his support for the press conference of a charity event organized by famous Chinese Tibet-born singer-songwriter Han Hong together with some other prominent government officials, including Zhang Haidi, Chairwoman of China Disabled Persons' Federation ( Zhang Haidi is a role model for China's disabled persons; she became a paraplegic at the age of five after she contacted polio; but she never gave up; she self-studied to master several foreign languages including English, Japanese, German and Esperanto; she finally obtained obtain a Master Degree in Philosophy in the University of Jinan in Shandong, and is currently a famous writer and translator.) International famous actress Zhang Ziyi was also there.
Han Hong had established a Charity Fund for her hometown Tibet 3 years ago. This year is the 60th year anniversary of Tibet's Liberation, and she is organizing a charity activity for August when she, with 30 medical experts/doctors/nurses, and 70+ media/press and volunteers will drive out from Beijing to commence on a 20-day charity tour, travelling along the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at an average altitude of 4000 Kilometers, visiting cities along the route until they reach Lhasa.
She said as a Tibetan, she always wants to help the poor and needy in her home province. And in the past 3 years she had been working on the project, and she did not expect Yao Ming would give her a helping hand, and now that she had managed to raise 6 million Renminbi worth of fund and materials, she claimed she is going to have her dream come true.
Yao Ming was obviously the focus of the press/media as reporters tried to press for the latest development about the "rumor" of his retirement. But he refused to give any comments, and just politely asked the reporters to focus on Han Hong's charity event.
As a result of the pressing media, Yao Ming took an early exit after saying a few words on the podium, and greeted Zhang Haidi.
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/usa/2011-0 ... 892948.htm Cross-Straits youths meet Updated: 2011-07-13
Beijing - President Hu Jintao encouraged young people from both sides of the Taiwan Straits to take part in more exchanges and to cooperate with one another while he attended an event on Tuesday aimed at cross-Straits youths.
The gathering that attracted 10,000 young people from both sides of the Straits was jointly held by 17 governmental institutions, including the Taiwan Affairs Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the All China Taiwanese Association and the Ministry of Education. Hu and the young people experienced traditional Chinese handcrafts, including woodblock printing, chime playing and saw a puppet show in the afternoon at the event at the Great Hall of the People. Hu also applauded young Taiwan entertainers after they performed a dance with electronic instruments. Hu and the Taiwan youngsters also visited an exhibition featuring works of traditional Chinese art, including calligraphy, Tibetan Thangka paintings and cloisonne. He then shook hands and posed for photos with representatives of the young people before delivering an impromptu speech. "Good afternoon, my young friends," he began. "I am delighted to meet here with you all. Inspired by your young spirit, I feel much more energetic." He said he hopes young people from Taiwan will benefit from traveling on the mainland and appreciate the bond between people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, saying that people from both Taiwan and the mainland share one family and are blood-bound brothers and sisters. Hu pointed out that people on both sides are cherishing links and pushing forward the hard-earned momentum of peaceful development, which provides the opportunity for young people from Taiwan and the mainland to exchange freely.
The responsibility of promoting the development of cross-Straits ties lies with the young, Hu stressed. At the end of his speech, Hu wished the youths from Taiwan a pleasant stay on the mainland and asked them to convey to their friends back in Taiwan his warm welcome. The event was part of a larger mainland-Taiwan exchange program aimed at engaging more than 10,000 young people from across the Taiwan Straits. The program kicked off in early July. Well 2 days before the long-awaited press conference about his future career plans tomorrow (July 20th), Yao Ming was seen here going out late at night with Yi Jianlain, who had flew into Shanghai to participate in a charity event of the visiting Kobe Bryant.
After Kobe Bryant's charity event at the Shanghai Peninsular Hotel, Yao Ming drove to pick Yi Jianlian up; he phoned up Yi Jianlian, waited in the lobby for Yi Jianlian to change into some casual clothings, and then went to the Three on the Bund to have a drink and a private chat.
