Well, this dispelled all the NONSENSE of Yao Ming wants to climb the political ladder up the hierarchy. "What Yao wants is to use his influence to do good deeds for society but not to seek a political position."
http://www.france24.com/en/20120116-chi ... s-politics 16 January 2012 China basketball star Yao Ming enters politics Not content with owning a basketball team, studying business and making wine, China's former NBA superstar Yao Ming has now become the youngest -- and tallest -- legislative advisor in Shanghai.
The 31-year-old was formally accepted as a member of an advisory body to Shanghai's legislature at the weekend -- a position that entitles him to make proposals for possible new laws -- the official China Daily reported.A photograph printed by the newspaper shows the 2.29-metre (7-foot, 6-inch) Yao towering above other newly selected members of the advisory body -- his latest venture since he formally retired from the Houston Rockets in July. "Raising proposals is very serious business and I do not want to be hasty," Yao was quoted as saying. Since July, Yao's busy schedule has involved him going back to school for a university degree in business management and helping manage the Shanghai Sharks, a Chinese basketball team. In November, he also set up a company to sell his own brand of wine using grapes from California's famed Napa Valley, and his new role in politics has sparked concern Yao may be taking on too much. But Zhang Chi, a spokesman for the Shanghai Sharks, dismissed these worries.
"We can trust him that he can balance all aspects of his work and study and do well in this job," he was quoted as saying.
"What Yao wants is to use his influence to do good deeds for society but not to seek a political position." Rumours have also been circulating online that Yao failed his final exam in advanced maths at Shanghai's Jiaotong University, which he joined in the autumn, with a score of 38 out of 100 -- claims denied by his management team.
"Yao believes his exam marks are a private matter and does not want to disclose them. But it was definitely not 38," Yao's personal spokesman, Zhang Mingji, was quoted as saying by the Shanghai Daily. Yao is China's first global sports superstar with a personal brand valued at more than $1 billion.

And yesterday (January 8 Sunday) Yao Ming went to tape a special program for Shanghai Oriental TV for the forthcoming Chinese Lunar New Year.
He was asked alot of questions by the Master of Ceremony, mostly about his life after retirement and about his little daughter Amy.
When he was asked about the results of his examination at Shanghai Jiaotong University, Yao Ming quipped examination results do not represent everything, and he refused to disclose his results, but just said mathematics gave him a hard time.
When asked what he wished for the future career for little Amy, Yao Ming said he had also causually discussed that with Ye Li, but both felt that it is too early for such discussion as she is too young. Yao Ming then quipped and rebuked the MC saying that the guy was studying medical school in university, but now had become a famous TV compere. So even as an adult he could not decide for himself his career, how can a 1 and 1/2-year-old determine her career?
Some photos of Yao Ming on that show.

After a tiring week of the CPPCC meeting, Yao Ming had another shooting/taping session yesterday at the Shanghai Oriental TV for the Spring Festival aka China Lunar New Year.
This time, he played a chef in a short film as well sang some Chinese New Year song together with a group of children.

Maybe this is another version of Yao Ming vs Shaquille O'Neal. As all TV stations are competing for viewership for the prime time Chinese Lunar New Year Eve variety show, after they knew Shanghai Oriental TV had invited Yao Ming as one of its stars for the show, Hunan Satelitte TV signed Shaquille O'Neal with a US$ six-figure appearance fee for their own show. Shaq flew in to Changsha of Hunan on a chartered flight last Saturday, and spent Sunday in the filming studio taping his part which including all kinds of funny stuff: Chinese shadow puppet show; kungfu fighting, street dance, preparation Chinese dumplings etc. And when Shaq finished making one extra big dumpling, he said it will be his Chinese New Year present for Yao Ming !! Shaquille O'Neal left Changsha, Hunan Sunday night after his 1-day swirlwind visit. Some photos of shaq in the taping session:

Chinese in Houston celebrate Lantern Festival

Updated: 2012-02-06 10:33(Xinhua)
HOUSTON - A large number of overseas Chinese in Houston Sunday celebrated China's traditional Lantern Festival, one of the most important festivals to the Chinese people home and abroad
A variety of events were held by Chinese organizations in Houston to mark the festival, which falls on January 15 of China's lunar calendar.
It has been the ninth year since the Wong Family Benevolent Association of Houston began to hold its annual lantern festival gala, where an array of Chinese traditional customs could be appreciated, such as riddle-guessing, dragon dance, singing and dancing, and the must-have for lantern festival -- rice ball.
The most eye-catching at Sunday's gala were the parents of famous Chinese basketball star Yao Ming and his 20-month-old daughter Yao Qinlei. The trio took to the stage, where little Qinlei wished everyone a happy year of the Dragon.
Chinese Consul General in Houston Xu Erwen attended the celebration and wished all overseas Chinese in the city a happy new year.
Representatives of US Congresspersons Al Green and Sheila Jackson Lee also joined the event and sent best wishes to local Chinese in the Year of the Dragon.
