what is in it for Atl to trade w LAL ?

stir up more fan interest (KCP) in the midst of a tanking season,
    w/o jeopardizing its draft position

LOL !!!

IF
the Hawks is tanking, then they won't bother stirring up fans' interest and therefore game attendence/gate receipt, cos NO FANS would be interested to pay to watch/support their home team LOSING/TANKING ALL THE TIME !!!

Any deal that sends Lin away would likely need to involve another PG coming back to Atlanta.
not if the team is in tanking mode

So you think a local kid who will get limited minutes being 1 of 7 SGs on the team will bring more interest to the team than Jeremy Lin, who has a global fan base?

altho Atlantans wishfully refer the Atl as the NYC of the South,
they don't give a rats azz about JLin, the Calif Asian who went to Harvard,
much less his fan base outside of Atl
the South is as provincial as can be; that is why, in Atlanta,
the human interest story surrounding the local KCP would be much more compelling

Of course no one in the Atlanta area cares about JLin. But Lin’s fans from around the world buy jerseys and buy NBA League Pass to watch him play, and that adds revenue to the team. A local player buried in a depth chart with 6 players at the same position won’t do squat for the team’s viewership if the team is tanking.

au contrare,

for a team that is tanking,
a human interest story surrounding the local KCP sells, in particular the provincial south

I can see the headlines now..."Local kid makes most of his 10 minutes on the court in blow-out loss"...so compelling!

No...if the Hawks trade Lin, it'll be to collect draft picks or a front-court player who is either young with potential or older and can mentor the younger players...and they'll also need to get another PG back because the team really has no one at that position on the roster who can actually play NBA-level PG on the second unit who can keep them in games other than Lin.
