Quote:
In six events, Michael Phelps has set six world records en route to earning six gold medals.

The American swimmer's superhuman performance has amazed many, but given the number of athletes who recently have been linked to doping, questions about how Phelps has produced such fast times are inevitable

Following his win in the 200m IM, Phelps emphatically denied using any performance-enhancing drugs.

"Anybody can say whatever they want, but I know I'm clean," Phelps said. "People can question it all they want, but the facts are the facts. I have the results to prove it."

He is taking part in "Project Believe," a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency volunteer initiative where athletes provide additional testing that is more frequent and more sophisticated than the usual regime of tests.

Phelps can tie Mark Spitz's 1972 record of seven gold medals at a single Olympic Games when he takes to the pool for the 100m butterfly on Day 8 in Beijing. His biggest rival in the event may be his teammate, Ian Crocker, who has held the world record in the event for more than three years.

After that event, he just has one more race -- a relay -- scheduled. If everything goes according to his plan, he will earn his record eighth gold medal in Beijing.

I just want to add that Americans say Phelps perfect swimmer's body allows him to win gold racing heat after heal with very little rest.

Height 6-4
Wingspan 6-7
Short, Powerful legs of a man 6-0
Long lean Torso of a man 6-9
Size 14 flippers.... I mean feet
Hands the size of plates.

Impressive stats.

However, Chinese use tiny gymnasts that's also physically specialized to excel in their spot. I don't see Americans defending this. In fact it's the opposite, with the allegations of underage gymnasts. These allegations gets worse.. it's 2 years, 3 years, and now 4 years.

Why is the American media so readily attacking other nation's athletes while spending so much coverage defending their own bias.

I'm curious if China will use their media to attack possible doping in track and field. Eye for an eye tactics.

no. that's an entirely chinese mentality

americans believe Phelps preternatural competitiveness and unmatched work ethic is why he wins

chinese are the ones who believe matching a body with a sport = medals. just as they excuse chinese incompetence in some sports as genetic or "chinese cant compete in this sport" or "chinese have weak bodies for this sport" etc. in the US 5'9" dudes can play LB in the NFL like 6'4" guys and people LOVE them for it

Westerners admire will and the imposition of that will on others. so phelps being "perfectly built" for swimming is a much less compelling idea than his mind being extremely aggressive

if China suspects US track and field to be cheating they have a MORAL OBLIGATION to present that evidence ASAP not only for their own athletes but the Americans who got their spots stolen in nationals

actually no. it's the EXACT opposite. if it was an issue of using perfectly specialized people that would be no problem... but the idea is they are exploiting those athletes before their bodies change that is also a major issue. are those 13 year old girls going to be just as good at 21? or 17? if so why are they so desperate to use them now?

it's a case of china even cheating their own guidelines. if china had a surplus of these perfectly engineered girls, they could easily swap out ones of legit age for the underage ones... the fact that these girls are not actually perfectly suited (in terms of age v development) they had to cheat

I appreciate your insight on the topic.

Lets go with sports science.

It takes specialized training and a team of support personnel and coaches to create a top level athlete for each individual sport.

Obviously, richer nations produce more abundant athletes with relevance to their population size.

"work ethics" is not science. It's very questionable in actual correlation to athletic performance.

You're assuming that these girls are underage. Until there is counter evidence, the Chinese did an excellent job at selecting the right athletes for their gymnastic program. There's absolutely no prof that these girls will not perform just as well in the next 4 years. Those tiny girls had breasts and very developed muscularly. Their Gold medal performance can't be ignored.

We'll have to wait and see if these girls grow 5 inches, I doubt it because the Japanese female gymnasts were similar in size and weight with the Chinese.

There is a video proving that the Chinese girls are not underage. So please stop your stupid China-bashing.

the us actually tries to catch its athletes for doping. china refuses to address concerns regarding altered age.

phelps isn't doping, but nobody is going to let him leave without his 8 golds. the swimming governing body wouldnt even his win last night be protested and reviewed.
