It's frustrating to root for China in basketball. The players make mistakes that should be a simple play to make (like inbounding the ball, or pass into the post). The coach tells a 7'2" center to make a crucial pass in crunch time (instead of a PG). The wing players are not athletic enough (SFs are supposed to be the most athletic athletes in all of sports)

I don't know what is preventing the CNT from improving. There won't be another Yao Ming in our lifetime. China is supposed to be the class of Asia in basketball. Japan and Korea got soccer and baseball. Philippines got boxing. SEA got sepak takraw. For all this talk about China being the next superpower, China is weak in team sports.

I watched the highlights of this game. It's a big wake-up call for China. Ultimately, it comes down to their entire strategy for developing their team. Look at the box score: http://www.fiba.basketball/basketballwo ... b=boxscore

It was Yi vs. the entire other team (which coincidentally includes 3 NBA players, 1 D-league player, and 1 US NCAA player). Shuo Fang played well and Wang Zhelin was decent as a backup and that was literally it.

China was out-rebounded and out-blocked despite having three 7-footers and had as many turnovers as assists. They also allowed Nigeria to shoot 57% from the field. Nigeria had four players in double figures and only one player who did not score at all. Nigeria actually played really good team basketball. China played isos for Yi and one-pass drive and dish to everybody else. China's defense was non-existent.

If you take a step back, there's no way China could have won this game. China's basketball strategy is to bone-scan a million 8-year olds to find the tallest dudes they can find, teach them how to play basketball, put them on the national team and surround them with scrubs. Everything about it is one-dimensional. They have no guards, no athleticism, and no desire to compete. It's sad because Yi actually played really well. He has a reputation as a bust in the NBA, but he did what he was supposed to do.

China needs high school and college-level competitive organized sports. Get rid of the Soviet system. Every province in China should be having its own high school and college championship every year. It's ridiculous. There are people who can compete and win in all of these sports in China, there just isn't a system that can find them and develop them.

Yao Ming needs to hire better coaches, or he himself will have to become the coach for the CNT.
