The CBA has a draft now??? Was there a 2015 CBA draft? If so, who was the #1 pick?

This mean, Chris Tang has to wait for the 2016 CBA draft to join the CBA?

This is retarded. IMO, this is to punish Tang for trying to side step the Chinese system.

YEAH, CBA started their so-called CBA Draft for CBA and WCBA this summer, aimed at attracting university students or other players from China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

Only university students that had played in CUBA or other university leagues can apply for the draft; as for other non-university basketballers including professional players from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and other countries that want to apply for the draft, they need recommendations from CBA/WCBA teams or provincial sports institutes.

There was NO OFFICIAL RANKING for players applied for draft, and each CBA (or WCBA) team has 2 chances to pick their draft, starting from the team that was ranked last in the league in the previous season.

But for this inaugural draft, it was A JOKE, A FLOP, AND TOTAL FAILURE !!!

To start with, only 20 players (19 university students from China, 1 university student from Hong Kong) applied for CBA draft and 3 players applied for WCBA draft.

Before the draft, there was a 3-day training camp for the applicants in July during which the players went through drills and tests (speed, running, shooting, weight lifting etc.) to check if they meet CBA/WCBA standards, as well as to give the scouts of CBA/WCBA teams to screen/identify players of their choice.

3 of the male applicants withdrawn from the camp, and all players (men and women) failed to meet CBA/WCBA standards.

Then in the official draft held on August 19, only 1 male player was picked by Chongqing of CBA (all the remaining 19 CBA teams abandoned their rights to pick draft), and 1 female player (from Taiwan) picked by Henan of WCBA The whole draft lasted for 6 minutes !!!

The player, or what you called #1 Draft of CBA, picked by Chongqing Flying Dragons is Fang Junlei 方君磊, a point guard from Northwestern Industrial University. Fang Junlei is 23 years old, 1.83M(6 ft) tall, 70 KG (154 lbs), played for Northwestern Industrial University in CUBA for 5 seasons (a total of 45 games), averaging 11.2 ppg, 1.9 apg and 1.9 spg, and led his team to the Final 8 in CUBA for 4 seasons.

Well, personally think Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks had approached Chris Tang BEFORE the CBA Draft regulations were announced in May.

Besides, it was rumored that possibly Jiangsu Nangang Dragons was P!$$ED that Chris Tang did not want to join them (as Chris Tang is from Lianyungang of Jiangsu, and had been associated with Jiangsu basketball academy before he left to study in USA), and therefore they sort of protested to CBA, and CBA stepped in to use the new CBA Draft rules to void/nullify Chris Tang's contract with Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks.

YEAH, as Malorkayel put it right, CBA just used the NEW RULES to punish both Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks and Chris Tang for trying to side-step the systems.

Thanks for the info Pryuen.

I had been hoping for the CBA to implement the new draft. This allows basketball players not part of the 'system' a chance to play in the league. This is one step away from the old Soviet sports system and closer towards the American sports system.

But it is quite sad only 1 player was worthy of being drafted. it's going to take some time before quality players are picked from the draft.

If Tang becomes successful at Pro Ball, the next gen might be influenced to leave the Chinese system. That possibility must be annoying to the establishment.

Speaking of... what happened to Sun Yue?

Sun Yue had been doing FINE this summer.

He had surgery on his right shoulder in New York back in early May by New York Knicks' team physician and orthopedist Dr. Answorth Allen, recommended by Stephon Marbury.

Then in the past 3 months, he had been dong recuperation/rehabilitation back in China.

According to latest reports, he has been on the right track, and is ahead of his 6-month rehabilitation schedule. He passed the CBA players' preseason tests in Shenyang just a week ago, finishing the to-and-fro running in 64 seconds (passing mark 65 seconds), and intensity shooting (16/24 under 2 minutes, the passing mark is 15/24 for exterior player, 20/30 for interior player).

He told the press that other than he still could not play contest basketball now, he is confident he should be ready for the new season in another 2 months' time.

What is Chris Tang going to do now? Is he going back to USA/UC Riverside? or will he be out of basketball for a year?

Well, Chris Tang probably got NO CHOICE other than returning to UC Riverside to continue his studies and hopes he will be given more play minutes in the new school year.

Even if he decides to abandon basketball for a year, he probably has to go through the CBA Draft next year, and cannot join the team of his own choice.

Looks like I was WRONG to presume Chris Tang returning to UC Riverside to wait for his chance.

He had been invited to join NBDL Iowa Energy, an affliate NBDL team of Memphis Grizzlies of NBA, whose current head coach is Bob Donewald Jr. the ex head coach of China National Team and Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks !!!

He was on the 15-player roster of Iowa Energy's training camp after Iowa Energy waived 2 players already.

It remains to be seen whether Chris Tang can prove himself in the NBDL preseason and stay there to play for Bob Donewald Jr.

Maybe that's a GENIUS way that his agent Lu Hao (Yao Team) or Yao Ming taught him that if he could become a professional at NBDL, then he could return to join Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks ANYTIME WITHOUT having to go through that CRAP CBA Draft !!!
