As the best power forward from Asia, how come Yi Jianlian is not in the NBA? There is some racism in this issue.

Despite delivering 29 points (12/19 FG% 5/9 FT%)/17 rebounds/1 assist/1 block shot in his debut CBA game, Eddy Curry could not prevent Wang Zhelin leading his Fujian SBS Xunxin team to beat Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank 117 ~ 110 in Yiwu of Zhejiang.

Wang Zhelin out-duelled and sort of neutralized the damage done by Eddy Curry. In the 6th game of his rookie season, Wang Zhelin delivered his 4th 20/10, in fact, his career-high scoring of 31 points (12/22 FG% 0/1 3-pointer% 7/11 FT%)/15 rebounds/2 assists/2 block shots and stunned the NBA veteran Eddy Curry.

Initially Eddy Curry showed his experience over Wang Zhelin in 1Q; but as the game went along, Wang Zhelin showed that he had high basketball IQ to succeed in future. He started to play better defense guarding Eddy Curry; he had 2 block shots on Eddy Curry while Eddy Curry could only respond by 1 block shot.

In offense, Wang Zhelin succeeded in scoring a few And 1 over Eddy Curry and Ding Jinhui (one of the best interior defenders in the national team); he also finished 2 fast break layups; and when he found it tough going into the low post, Wang Zhelin started to draw Eddy Curry out and then made his jumpers over the reaching arms of Eddy Curry.

But most important of all, in 4Q, when Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank was on their come-from-behind run to reduce the arrears to only 6 points from 22 points (as Eddy Curry was suddenly on fire scoring 16 points out of his 29 points in 4Q), it was Wang Zhelin who showed he had big heart to step up to stop the bleeding. He first blocked a shot by Eddy Curry, and then made a turnaround jumper to stretch Fujian's lead back to 8 points with about 1:30 minutes to go.

Other than Wang Zhelin who stole the limelight of the night, both expats of Fujian also did well.

Sundiata Gaines scored 29 points/3 rebounds/7 assists while Will McDonald contributed 21 points/17 rebounds/5 assists/1 block shot.

Zhao Tailong (11 points) and Zhou Qixin (12 points)
combined for 23 points.

For Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank, other than Eddy Curry, 3 other players were in double-digits.

Quincy Dolby scored 28 points/6 rebounds/6 assists/5 steals; Ding Jinhui (20 points/8 rebounds/1 assist) and Gong Songlin (18 points/2 rebounds/1 assist) combined for 38 points.

With this rare away win, Fujian SBS Xunxin improved their record to 4W 2L and rose to #4 in the league. They will play Dongguan New Century Leopards tomorrow, and Wang Zhelin will be pitched up against his U19 national team team mate Li Muhao which will show us WHO is the REAL DEAL as the next potential Chinese NBA player !!!

It looks like Wang zhelin is much better than Yao Ming of the same age and is now dominating the CBA.

Impressive! Is Eddy Curry the toughest matchup in the CBA for Wang?

Would love to see a highlight of Wang in this match. Any chance of a video source?

IMHO, it is TOO FAR-FETCHED to say Wang Zhelin is dominating in CBA.

HE IS NOT !!!

Wang Zhelin had been doing very well in 6 games so far.

Statistically, he is
FAR BETTER than the performance of Yao Ming, Wang Zhizhi, Mengke Bateer and Yi Jianlian in their respective rookie seasons.

But he is NOT dominating in CBA YET !!

He was fortunate in the sense

  • Fujian SBS Xunxin team management and head coach Tab Baldwin (former Head Coach of national team of New Zealand, Lebanon) trusted him, wanted to build the team around him, started him, designed set plays around him and gave him long play minutes (he is averaging close to 40 minutes of play in every game). Therefore he got much longer play minutes than Yao Ming, Wang Zhizhi, Mengke Bateer and Yi Jianlian got in their respective rookie seasons.
  • Fujian SBS Xunxin had specifically hired a strength and conditioning coach to work with him.
  • He is a rookie, and his opponents had taken him lightly in the past few games.
But this will change. Teams will start to study his plays, and double-team him to reduce the offensive damage he inflicts on them.

And so far, Wang Zhelin had not REALLY dominated on his opponents; centres of CBA teams are usually expat players; Wang Zhelin had fared well offensively against them, but defensively, very often those expat centres also scored tons of points over him. So they basically just neutralized each other. That I don't view it as domination.

Besides the CBA season is a long and gruelling one, with 3 games played in a week (Sunday, Wednesday, Friday).

It is only 6 rounds (i.e. 2 ~ 3 weeks) into the new season. Since Wang Zhelin logged heavy minutes in every of his game,
it remains to be seen whether his stamina, form, condition and 20/10s can sustain as the season goes along.

And let's hope fatique won't set in, and his progress won't be hindered by injuries.

YUP, Eddy Curry is Wang Zhelin's toughest matchup SO FAR.

So far he had only played 6 games, and the following are the respective players he had been pitched up against:

  • Ilunga Mbenga of Qingdao Double Star Eagles
  • Mengke Bateer/Tang Zhengdong of Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers
  • Charles Gaines/Yan Pengfei of Shanxi Fenjiu Zhongyu
  • Peter John Ramos/Wang Zheng of Zhejiang Guangsha Lions
  • Garret Siler/Mike Harris of Jiangsu Nangang Dragons
  • Eddy Curry/Zhang Dayu of Zhejiang Chouzhou Bank
He had yet to play up against some other centres of CBA teams. But for sure, Eddy Curry is one of the BIG NAMES in NBA that had been recruited to play in CBA.

I will be interested to watch/observe how Wang Zhelin will fare against some centres/power forwards that can shoot jumpers/3-pointers.... i.e. players like Wang Zhizhi and Yi Jianlian, and how Wang Zhelin defends them.

NOT SURE IF you can watch the following video outside of China.

http://player.ku6.com/refer/V_Rsm2CRLmB ... TA../v.swf

It is not the highlight of Wang Zhelin against Eddy Curry.

But it was a special short video done by CCTV5 on Wang Zhelin, which included interview of him on his rookie season, clippage of his plays in the new season, some comments from his CBA contemporary players as well as from his coaches in the junior national team and Fujian SBS Xunxin.

Thanks for the video. It works in the USA.

If Eddy Curry was a 4th overall draft pick at age 18, Wang Zhelin should go higher than 3rd overall. Wang is putting up 20/10 in a league full of men. The projected #1 pick in the 2013 NBA draft is center Cody Zeller and he's only putting up 15/7 numbers. I would say Wang is going up against guys better than the scrubs Zeller goes up against in college.

Wang ZL is currently ranked 10th for international players. If he can't play defense, he will get fouled out in the NBA. He should learn by watching Asik play defense.

Asik never leaves his comfort zone, ever. Not like Yi, or WZZ or even Yao, they would get switched to guard smaller quicker guys and get burned. Asik would just say fck that, they can hit the outside shot, or Asik will grab the rebound. Take that from the Kevin Love playbook.

Asik definitely got coached to let the guards do their own sht and leave them out to dry. But it shows how bad the rockets coaching is now.
