The new 2012/13 CBA season will commence in another 3 week's time.

So like previous year, this will be a dedicated thread of the 2012/13 CBA season and Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks where I will regularly update/post about CBA games, and in particularly Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks, the team that owned by Yao Ming.

As quite a number of CBA teams are still recruiting their expats and finalizing their roster, I will report on this thread in the next few days the rosters of the 17 CBA teams.

As I suggested, this thread should be defined as a new sub forum or sub division.

Let's start with Yao Ming's Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks.

So after a pretty successful season of finishing 6th in the CBA league and entering the playoff, Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks retained the service of their head coach, Dan Panaggio, a seasoned CBA (Continental Basketball Association) coach, who had also been the head coach for LA Lakers' NBDL affiliate, LA D-Fenders.

They also hired ex LA Clippers assistant coach Rory White to be their assistant coach. Their strength and conditioning coach is an ex Houston Rockets strength and conditioning assistant.

Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks had also nailed down the services of 2 expats:

  • Elijah Milsap, the brother of Utah Jazz's Paul Milsap, who had played in NBDL Tulsa 66ers and LA D-Fenders. Elijah Milsap is 25 years old, 1.98M/6ft 6, 98KG/215 lbs, and his natural position is shooting guard.
  • DJ White, ex Charlotte Bobcats for the past 2 seasons. DJ White is 26 years old, 2.06M/6ft 9, 114 KG/250 lbs, and he plays as power forward.
They have also recruited Chinese Taipei player Jet Chang Tsung Hsien, after he failed to crack into NBA.

For local players, Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks had added a few young players either promoted from their junior team, as well as transfer from other CBA teams.

  • They recalled veteran Wang Sizhang, who comes back from other CBA team to provide veteran leadership to the young team.
  • They recalled the service of Cai Liang from Qingdao Double Star Eagles after a 2 year's loan as well as Ge Yang, a young and upcoming point guard back from his 1-year loan to Xinjiang Guanghui Flying Tigers.
  • They also added 2 new young point guards, Zhang Yuan and Zhai Yi, as well as a centre Zheng Yali transferred from Zhejiang Guangsha Lions.
So the full roster of Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks for the new 2012/13 season is:

  • Liu Wei
  • Zhang Yuan
  • Zhai Yi
  • Ge Yang
  • Liu Ziqiu
  • Meng Lingyuan
  • Wang Yong
  • Cai Liang
  • Peng Fei
  • Wu Yang
  • Wang Ligang
  • Max Zhang Zhaoyu
  • Zheng Yali
  • Wang Sizhang
  • Tseng Wen-ting (Chinese Taipei player)
  • Jet Chang Tsung Hsien (Chinese Taipei player)
  • Elijah Milsap
  • DJ White

This season's champ will still belong to one of the rivalry: Beijing or Guangdong.

Beijing gets a very excellent SF: Li Gen, who is the MVP of all-star game last season. But their players who play PF or C are still weak.

Guangdong makes Yi back home but their veterans like Zhu Fangyu and Wang Shipeng are in declining.

So, hard to say.

CBA is now relying more and more on expats. The result is that they seem to have a very influential league, but Chinese basketball is ranked lower than before.

yeahhh. the common argument is that these expats arent making the local players any better, and it just becomes a chuck-fest for the expat stars.

GD's definitely going to be up there. I imagine Xinjiang is gonna wanna come back after last season.

Xinjiang's roster is too old. Basically, Xinjiang's rising is relying on Bateer, former Beijing center. Now Bateer is getting older and older. Another center Tang Zhengdong seems in declining too. Xirelijiang has no improvement.

So I don't think they are a threat for Beijing.

You can also use the translation tool of google Chrome to surf some Chinese websites. The tool is very good.
