In less than 3 hours to go, barring any accidents, we should all be able to hear the word "retirement" personally from Yao Ming !!!

This is going to be one of the BIGGEST ANNOUNCEMENT/PRESS CONFERENCES OF ALL TIMES in the history of Chinese sports.

Since the outbreak of the rumor of his retirement on Yahoo Sports on July 9th, and after Team Yao announced that Yao Ming will hold a press conference to talk about his future career plans on July 20th, MORE THAN 100 international and domestic media/press agencies applied to attend this press conference. As a result, more than 300 press/media reporters had registered and will attend today's press conference.

There will be live coverage from the local Shanghai Oriental TV, as well as from CCTV. CCTV will live broadcast the press conference for 5 hours, starting from 13:00 pm even though the press conference will only start at 14:00 pm. And there will also be a one-on-one live interview of Yao Ming by his personal good freind, CCTV5 basketball analyst/commentator Yu Jia right after the press conference. And the whole program will be televised domestically and internationally over 3 channels: CCTV5 Sports Channel, CCTV 24-Hours News Channel, and CCTV9 the English channel.

Since Yao Ming is a free agent since July 1, and NBA is currently in a lockout, orginally, he was not allowed to contact any persons of Houston Rockets management or coaching/working staff and vice versa. But NBA had granted a special permission for Houston Rockets' General Manager Drayl Morey to represent Houston Rockets, and he had arrived Shanghai last night to be there at the press conference.

And some of Yao Ming's close friends in Houston, including Andy Yao Anhong had also flown from Houston to Shanghai to be there at the press conference.

I will try to cover this press conference with videos, photos, and transcripts or translated articles about what was said in the press conference in this dedicated thread.

STAY TUNED !!! 8)

Yao Ming's press conference will take place at the Kerry Hotel, Pudong, a 5-star hotel, just newly opened less than 5 months ago, managed by the Shangri-La group.

And all registered media/press reporters internationally (Associated Press, Reuters, CNN, AFP, UK, Japan, Hong Kong) and domestically had to come for registration starting 11:00 pm, 3 hours before the press conference commences.

Here are the photos at the press confernece venue at Kerry Hotel, Pudong, and that 2 Chinese characters 明谢 literally means Yao Ming Thanks You !!!

Is the press conference over already? I'm watching NBA TV now and don't see anything related to Yao.

IT'S FOR REAL. He OFFICIALLY told the hundreds of international/domestic media/press reporters at the press conference he is retiring from NBA and basketball.

But the interesting part was during the Q&A session, when he was asked whether he will retire from the national team playing for China, he did not give a STRAIGHT answer.

He said he is retiring as a NBA professional player;
he said basketball is not just NBA, and his future will not be separated from basketball, as he could still do alot of things for his Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks team, and for the young players of China. He said he still wants to contribute to Chinese basketball, not necessarily as a player, but from other ways/methods.

Yao was asked about his music website. He didn't give an answer as to whether he will seek a listing on Nasdaq.

Yao was asked about setting up his brand name. He said he needs to get his name back first.

He was asked to become the coach for the national team of Netherlands.

He was sneaky and just said he is retiring from professional basketball, but didn't say whether he will play at the 2012 Olympics for the national team.

After so many years, I saw Colin Pine there again as Yao Ming's interpreter.

The press conference was over for almost 2 hours now.

CCTV5/CCTV News/CCTV 9 did 2 20-minutes or so specials covering Yao Ming's career in CBA and on the International stage (in Asian Championships, Olympics, World Cahmpionships etc.), and in NBA from 13:00 pm to 14:00 pm.

Then the press conference started at 14:00pm. 30 minutes for Yao Ming's farewell speech , speeches from officials and group photo time for his family, with officials, with close friends from Houston and China and with Team Yao.

Then another 45 minutes Q&A session for the hundreds of international/domestic media/press reporters. Surprisingly, he invited Colin Pine to be his interpreter again, reliving those years when he first entered NBA.

Then a 45 minute live interview by his good friend Yu Jia, CCTV5 basketball analyst/commentator.

Now it's another 2 hour Specials of film footage of Yao Ming's career, spanning from his childhood, to his CBA years, his international career (Asian Championships, World Championships, Olympics etc.) and his NBA career with Houston Rockets.

I'll post MORE photos of the press conference when I finish watching this 2-hour Special.

Stay Tuned.
