Photos of Yao Ming in yesterday's press conference/launch of his Yao Monster's products (ear phones, sack bags, sun glasses, watches) in Shanghai.

And from the photos, you can feel how hot Shanghai was yesterday. Yao Ming was steaming and sweating even in an air-conditioned conference hall of Shanghai Gardens Hotel.

Geeeeez, today is the hottest day of this summer for Shanghai. 39.6 degree Centigrade (103 degrees Fahrenheit).

And the crazy Yao Ming had 3 commercial activities all packed into this afternoon.

  • 14:30 pm at the Shanghai Garden Hotel, a re-run of the Yao-Monster launch.
  • 16:00 pm at the Shanghai Children's Palace, a get-to-gether time with children in his capacity as the Image Spokesperson for Oreo of Nabisco Division of Kraft Foods.
  • 17:00 pm at Nanjing Road for the launch of the 2010 MAXXIS Green Tire Campaign as I outlined above.
3 commercial activities all packed into 6 hours today.

OOPPSS..........

On further research, I've messed up the sequence of the activities.

It should be the 2010 MAXXIS Green Tire Campaign at 14:30 pm, and the Yao Monster launch/press conference at 17:00 pm.

NBA China held a press conference in Beijing yesterday (August 4) to announce the NBA China Game in October.

Yao Ming joined the press conference from Shanghai through video conferencing.

Alot fo questions thrown at him, and here is a summary of the major ones:

  • He confirmed that he will definitely join and play in the China Game (scheduled October 13 in Beijing and October 16 in Guangzhou).
  • He said the China Game in Beijing won't be the first game that he will play in the new season. He will play in Houston Rockets' preseason games so as to gel with the team and the new team mates.
  • He will return to Houston next week; then with doctors' approval, he will resume playing physical contact basketball. He is confident that he should be able to play physical contact basketball by September 25, i.e. when Houston Rockets preseasons camp commences.
  • He thought he will require 10 to 30 games to gel with his team/new team mates cos he had been away from 1 full season, and the game plan/strategies of the Rockets had changed. He thought the preseason games will help him to shorten the adaptation cycle.
  • His goal for the new season is that he can finish a full 82-game regular season injury-free, and lead the Houston Rockets to at least the 2nd round of the playoff and beyond.

Yao Ming appeared today (August 5) (in his capacity as the Global Image Ambassador of China Life Insurance) at the opening ceremony of its Second Annual Summer Camp for 50 orphans of earthquakes of Wenchuan (of Sichuan) and Yushu (of Qinghai) at the CWI Children's Palace of Shanghai (CWI: China Welfare Institute)

This is the second summer camp that China Life Insurance organized. Last year, the inaugurial Summer Camp was held in Beijing, when Yao Ming was supposed to be present at the opening ceremony, but could not make it due to his injury.

The camp will last for 7 days, and the participants, under guidance of volunteers, will visit various pavillions (including China, Main Theme, France, Norway, Ireland) of the Shanghai 2010 EXPO, as well as the site of the First People's Congress of Chinese Communist Party, Shanghai Animation Film Studio, Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, the manufacturing plant of large scale commecial airplane of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China Ltd, Shanghai Zoo, and Zhujiajiao, an ancient water town well-known throughout the country, with a history of more than 1700 years.

Yao Ming spoke a few words of encouragement for the young kids, and took photos, signed autographs for them.

It had been pretty quiet over the last 2 to 3 days with Big Yao fading out of the media limelight.

I originally thought he had left China for Houston on Sunday, as John told me the other day.

It turned out he has not yet returned.

Yesterday, he was seen going out to a dinner banquet he threw for some of his friends in Shanghai as a belated celebration of his baby girl's 1 month birth.

Andy Yao Anhong, who had accompanied Big Yao back from Houston for the Yao Foundation 2010 China Charity Tour was amongst those who got the invitation, and so was Xu Yong.

Seemed like Yao Ming and Xu Yong are still maintaining pretty good personal friendship.

has Xu Yong recovered enough to continue playing basketball?

it's so disappointing his basketball career ended. he would have been a 1st round draft pick this year.

I guess Yao Ming has become the icon/face of the City of Houston.

An extremely quiet 2 weeks since his team practice/scrimmage to the media.

He finally made a public appearance yesterday during a FIFA delegation visit to Houston to inspect the sports facilities of Houston to decide whether Houston is an appropriate host/venue for either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Eventually if Houston is successful in the bid, the City of Houston should never forget the effort/support put forth by Big Yao !!!

HOUSTON - The city of Houston Thursday hosted members of the FIFA delegation who are considering the United States as the location for a future World Cup.

Mayor Annise Parker and Houston Texans owner Bob McNair greeted the delegation at Reliant Stadium, one of the venues included in the U.S. bid.

The delegation and members of the U.S. Bid Committee took a brief tour of the stadium.

Houston is one of five cities visited by this week by the delegation, which arrived in New York on Monday.

The delegation is also looking at sites in Washington D.C., Miami and Dallas as World Cup venues in either 2018 or 2022.

After touring Reliant Stadium, the delegation and the U.S. Host Committee visited the George R. Brown Convention Center, which would serve as the international media center for the World Cup.

They met with Houston Rockets center Yao Ming and Houston Dynamo star Brian Ching.

Both athletes said they hope Houston will eventually be tapped to host the event.

"I feel it's a very good opportunity to have the World Cup come to Houston," Yao said.

Ching was also enthusiastic about the city's ability to participate in the event.

"I think the diversity here is right for the sport. I think it would be great for the Houston economy," Ching said.

Yao should lobby for World Cup soccer 2018 or 2022 in China instead.

MORON, China had OFFICIALLY given up bidding for 2018 and the 2022 World Cup.

The bidding procedure to host both World Cups began in January 2009, and national associations around the world had until 2 February 2009 to register their interest. And China did not respond to indicate their desire to host either 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

Big Yao could do NOTHING about that.
