haha, short for a Navi, but a Yao Avatar will be the tallest Navi ever, lol. Probably 4 metres instead of 3 metres.

It's been quiet for the past few days since it was the Chinese New Year.

Anyway, the Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks did not stop their team practice during this stretch.

Wednesday night (February 17), Yao Ming hosted a Chinese New Year banquet for his team to thank them for their hard work, and wish the team could return to their winning way tonight (February 19) on home court against Liaoning Panpan Hunters.

Zhao Wen, the deputy mayor of Shanghai in charge of sports and a couple of sports officials from the Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau were there at the banquet too.

Here is a video of Yao Ming drinking Maotai (the very strong Chinese liquor) at the banquet.

Big Yao had a busy day yesterday (February 19)......

First he met and greeted his mentor Li Qiuping with his Chinese New Year best wishes in the afternoon. This is the first time they met after July 2009 i.e. after he took over the Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks and told Li Qiuping that he would be replaced by an expat head coach.

He then went to Pudong Shenyuan Stadium to watch his team play against Liaoning Panpan Hunters, coached by Guo Shiqiang, his ex team mate in the national team, and now head coach of the Chinese national team.

With the purpose to cultivate/nurture young players with potentials and talents to be future pillars for the club, the Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks organize a 1-week training camp (from Feburary 20 ~ 26) for young kids/lads (born after 1995) that came from all over the nation. All the participants only paid for their own air/train tickets and Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks took care of their meals and accommodation.

And Yao Ming as the boss/owner of the Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks showed up this morning (Feburary 20) at the opening of the training camp at the Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau, and spoke a few words of encouragement to the participating kids.

Find out WHY Yao Ming did not show up in last night's (February 21) game of Shanghai MAXXIS Sharks with Jilin Longrun Tea Northeast Tigers at the Pudong Yuanshen Stadium in Shanghai.

He and his wife Ye Li were in Hangzhou yesterday.

They went to the famous Lingyin Temple (Temple of Soul's Retreat) 灵隐寺, one of the best-known Buddhist monasteries in China, at the foot of Lingyin Mountain of Hangzhou. Probably to make a wish for their baby.

They then spent some time at the beautiful Xixi National Wetland Park 西溪国家湿地公园.

Yao Ming then went for a "secret" meeting with Lou Ming, a multi-billionaire, the owner of another CBA team, Zhejiang Guangsha Lions in a restaurant near West Lake right after the game of Zhejiang Guangsha Lions with Guangdong Hongyuan Tigers at night. It was reported that they met to discuss about some possible co-operation between the 2 teams in CBA or even some possible future investment opportunities in NBA, cos Lou Ming (37 years old) is a basketball fanatic, nick named Mark Cuban of CBA, that once talked about his dream of investing in NBA teams.

He stayed in Hangzhou last night, and will return to Shanghai today.

His family does construction stuff. Made money during the boom. He more or less got the money from his dad, didn't make it on his own.

LOL..... I must have messed up with the dates and sequence of events....

Yao Ming and Ye Li were in Hangzhou on Sunday.

They were at the Xixi National Wetland Park.

And Yao Ming went for a very late night meeting with Lou Ming, owner of the Zhejiang Guangsha Lions.

But the temple visit was on very early Monday morning.

Yao Ming first went to Lingyin Temple (Temple of Soul's Retreat) 灵隐寺 as early as 06:00 am in the morning to burn incense (a customs during the Chinese New Year that brings good luck); he then sat together with the monks for a breakfast that was just plain vegetables;

One of the monks rushed to him with a basketball for his signature, and told him that the monks in Lingyin Temple will form a basketball team soon. Yao Ming gleefully autographed onto the basketball.

Image

Then at 07:30 am, Yao Ming left Lingyin Temple for another temple: Lingshun Temple 灵顺寺 at the Bei Gao Feng Mountain.

This 1,600-year-old temple is known as God of Wealth Temple to the local folk. Thousands of pilgrims make their way up here each year to light some incense and say some prayers to bring them fortunes.

Yao Ming stayed and had tea with the head monk there. The head monk gifted Yao Ming and his friends that accompanied him full sets of Hua Yan Jing 華嚴經 i.e. Avatamsaka Sutra which weighed more than 15 KG each set.

The head monk also took off from his wrist a bracelet that had accompanied him for more than 10 years and gifted to Yao Ming.

When asked what Yao Ming did at the Lingshun Temple, the head monk said Yao Ming did not ask for his own fortune, but just asked for the fortune and safety of his to-be-born child.
