Well, it depends on your definition of meaningless tournaments. World Championship? Olympics?

In his replies to the reporters in Houston, he said discussions had been underway in the past between Team Yao and CBA, and there were consensus (like what CBA had already done in previous 2 summers) that Big Yao will not be required to play in Asian level tournaments (i.e. Asian Games and Asian Championships) in future.

Besides, he might go ahead with the delayed surgery on his troubled right shoulder in the Summer of 2009. So
definitely he will not be taking part in the 2009 Asian Championship and all the warm-up friendlies/exhibition games & tournaments leading up to the 2009 Asian Championship.
