NOK Hornets @ Houston Rockets

Image

Time: 8 : 30 ET

Preview: The 37 - 41 Hornets take on the 50 - 29 Houston Rockets Saturday night on what is definitely a prominent game.
To borrow from John -
[quote="John"]The Rockets have to win this game. If they do, and Utah loses to Dallas on Friday and Phoenix on Saturday, then the Rockets will have a 3-game lead with two games to play, and will clinch home court against the Jazz. If they lose against the Hornets, then it gets very complicated, and I don

HOUSTON -- Cluutch, the Rockets' super-sized bear, has been leaving fans, referees and even opposing players red-faced over his antics ever since he entered the NBA.

Now, he's joining them.

The Rockets' Hall of Fame mascot unveiled his new red -- really red -- look and the team's Red 'N Rowdy playoff logo Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the franchise will begin selling playoff tickets at Toyota Center.

Cluutch will maintain his fresh red look throughout the Rockets' postseason run.

With the team's opening round playoff series against the Utah Jazz set to begin next week, Cluutch underwent the makeover at Fort Bend Toyota in Richmond.

The mascot entered the dealership's car wash with his classic look in the bed of a silver Toyota Tundra. Moments later, the Rockets' life-size teddy bear emerged from the wash with a bright-red appearance in a red truck that sported the team's new Red 'N Rowdy logo.

Cluutch will be showing off his fresh look Thursday morning at Toyota Center when playoff tickets go on sale at 10 a.m.

T-Mac's knee fine

Rockets guard Tracy McGrady on Thursday reported no further issues with his left knee after leaving Wednesday's game in the last minute in Portland.

Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy fell into McGrady while diving for a loose ball, with McGrady twisting the knee. According to Rockets athletic trainer Keith Jones, McGrady had no problems with the knee Thursday.

There is no practice today, but McGrady is expected to be ready to play Saturday against the Hornets.

Fit to be tied

Told after the Rockets held on to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 99-95 on Wednesday that the Utah Jazz lost again, giving the Rockets a 1 1/2 -game lead, Rockets center Yao Ming asked, "How many have they lost in a row?"

Told the Jazz had lost all five games since beating the Rockets, Yao said, "I can imagine what (Utah coach) Jerry Sloan's face looks like, probably worse than our coach in the fourth quarter tonight."

Who's the strongest of all?

As word spread that an article about Yao Ming in this week's Sports Illustrated reported that Yao was the strongest Rockets player, a few teammates sought time for rebuttal.

Forward Chuck Hayes was incredulous.

"Yeah, right," Hayes said. "Now hold on. I think Juwan ( Howard) might have a big problem with that."

As Hayes predicted, Howard also protested.

"I think they're saying that because they want the kids to think Yao is the strongest man on the team," Howard said. "Not true. Not true at all. You need to talk to Dave Macha (the Rockets' strength and conditioning coach). He'll tell you who it is."

But before Macha could be brought in, Howard said he already knew who's the strongest player.

"You're talking to him, and I have long arms and still lift more than Yao," Howard said.

"I'd say it's the two power forwards," Macha said. "Yao on a flat bench can do 105-(pound) dumbbells. Juwan and Chuck can, too. It's Juwan and Chuck. I'd say No. 44 (Hayes) and No. 5 (Howard). Now Yao is certainly one of the strongest guys. Yao has grown by leaps and bounds."

The true answer, however, might be none of the above. Because teams do not have players lift their maximum during the season, Macha said he has not seen Jake Tsakalidis' best.

"Jake is real strong, real strong, Macha said. "That guy is so strong, he's got that freaky strength."

Those dirty, rotten, no-good Mavericks. Keeping the pressure on the Rockets.

Funny things happen in the last week of the NBA season.

Just when the Rockets needed the Mavericks to play for them in the worst way, that's exactly what the Mavericks did. They played in the worst way.

With the best record in the league and home-court in the playoffs all the way through the NBA Finals already locked up, Dallas coach Avery Johnson has been giving some of his veterans rest.

On Friday night, Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse and Erick Dampier had the night off officially. But the rest of the Mavs roster also put their feet up and coasted though a 104-89 loss to the Utah Jazz. It ended a five-game Utah losing streak.

The loss by the Mavs was only their second at home since Dec. 7 and only their fifth of the entire season.

And by laying down in the road like squashed armadillos they helped Utah in its quest to get home-court in the first round over the Rockets.

Now the Rockets are 50-29 and the Jazz are 49-30 with three games left to play for each team. That keeps the Rockets' magic number for locking up home-court advantage at 3.

"We were definitely feeling the pressure," admitted Jazz point guard Deron Williams, who finished with 17 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds. "The way we've been playing lately, we needed to get a win."

Veteran Derek Fisher didn't mind that it came against a skeleton roster by the Mavs.

"Hey, at this point, I wouldn't care if it was five on zero, as long as they put the W up next to us at the end of the night," he said. "I don't care who wasn't playing for them. I know Dirk Nowitzki was out there."

Utah's last three games are all at home -- Phoenix, Portland and the Rockets.

The Rockets are at home to play New Orleans and Phoenix, then close out at Utah.

If Utah wins 2 of its last 3 games, the Rockets have to match that. Of course, the Rockets are playing three teams against whom they have a combined 1-8 record on the season.

It would have been so easy if Dallas would have helped the Rockets. But the Mavs laid down. They barely even tried. Nowitzki played just 30 minutes. The Mavs were hammered on the boards 50-26.

Funny things happen in the last week of the NBA season. Sometimes the best team in the league doesn't even try.
