I actually think it is because in China, people buy Jersey's not to wear them to games, but to wear on the playgrounds. In that case people really want players they can imagine themselves to be, as it is pretty unrealistic to imagine oneself to be Yao, people tend to buy Jerseys of the smaller players. I would for sure be laughed at if I wear a Yao Jersey to play basketball as I am only 5'5...
